Autumn--My Favorite Time of Year

Is there anything more beautiful than the colorful trees of autumn? I don't think so. Nature paints her foliage with cheerful and warm colors. I think that She's trying to ease us into the thought of the drab, cold winter months ahead. It's Her way of cushioning the blow! Whatever the reason, the beauty and wonder of this awesome time of year never ceases to amaze me. I wanted to share these views with you, because they will all too soon give way to yet another season.

Unexpected Encounter

As we head out for the woods, we surprise a raccoon family in action. There are 4 babies, but you only see 3 here. Number 4 is a little smaller and more easily distracted than the rest. It is always bringing up the rear and exploring all its surroundings. I enjoy the comedy as it suddenly realizes the rest of the family has moved on. It must work those little legs as fast as it can to catch up!

Usually mama raccoon and her 4 babies forage at night. I suspect they are anxious to load up on nutrition in anticipation of their long wintertime hibernation. They must be sure to pack away as many fat calories as possible.

This raccoon family has been around since early spring, at which time the youngsters were very tiny. They have gained quite a bit while hunting for food by watching and following in their mama's footsteps. So cute!

The Birds Are Very Active This Morning!

When the birds are active, you can bet there's a storm of some sort on the way. As a matter of fact, I just heard the weather report; they are calling for a rainy and windy night tonight. The birds have some sort of extra sense that tells them they had best eat now and then hunker down and shelter from the oncoming bad weather! Mother Nature has provided them with this sense to help them to survive the elements.

When I see all this extra activity, I will add some day-old bread crumbs to the feeders to give them a boost in the fat department. This will keep their feathers healthy as well as help the birds to stay warm while they ride out the inclement weather.

Heading Up Into The Woods

We'll leave the backyard now and head on up into the woods. I just love to pause and watch my birds because they make all my cares and stress float away! I am blessed with a wonderful group of feathered friends and a very peaceful woodland area. Walking in the woods is something I enjoy every day that the weather allows.

Everywhere you look there's a variegated tapestry of Nature's colors. The tree leaves are in various stages of coloration depending upon the amount of sunlight that reaches them, and the moisture and chemical content of the soil in which they are growing.

What a beautiful area to live in! Thank you for allowing me to walk with you on this fall day. We had such a warm fall that the leaves are just now changing, but they will be spectacular in another week.

This is a really beautiful hub! What a wonderful place t0 live!

Autum is definately my favourite season. There is just something so magical about it all. Whether it's the colours or the animal activity - I don't know - it just seems so very special.

What a great job Mama racoon has done rearing her young ones - very healthy looking family and beautiful animals to boot!

I know what you mean about hearing the birds and when that happens in such beautiful surroundings it makes it even more magical!

I loved this wonderfu hub with it's stunning photos of your home! Voted up + shared!!

Thank you for taking me along on this beautiful and peaceful walk through the woods near your home.

I love how you are truly connected to the nature around you, including all the animals.

Seems like you feed the birds extremely well!

I also loved the fact that you told us the names of the trees when you were describing their colorful leaves.

I'm appreciate nature, but don't often know the names of the trees.

Voted up across the board except for funny. Also shared.

I had responded to this wonderful article earlier today, but for some unexplained reason, my comment seems to have disappeared. I did vote in your survey and also voted this up and beautiful. I too am a proud resident of the Southern Tier and fully appreciate the spectacular area we live in. Just today I had the joy of watching the blue birds, cardinals, squirrels and various other birds gingerly feed from the various feeders in the backyard. We truly are blessed to live in the region we do and I thank my lucky stars everyday. Oh, and might I add, I am a proud member of Agway's bird club, which affords me a discount on the various types of seed I purchase on an all too regular basis. My wife says I make lazy birds and I just laugh.

Hi Nell! I am so glad you enjoyed this walk in my beautiful woodlands. I have so many squirrels running around all the time, but they don't stay still long enough for me to snap a good picture. It's hard enough trying to capture the birds' images! This year the acorns are extremely abundant, so all the critters are enjoying them. In fact, last month it was literally raining acorns. The squirrels were working the trees so well that I had to actually wear a hard hat when I went outside!

So glad you stopped by and thank you for your comments. It's always nice when you visit!

Happyboomernurse, I am so glad you joined me on this lovely walk through my woods. Nature and I go way back! My grandfather instilled in me a very deep appreciation for all animals when I was very young. He especially taught me about the different birds.

I learned about the trees and their bark and leaves from my uncle.

Thank you so much for your votes and the share! They are definitely appreciated.

pagesvoice, I am so glad to meet another Southern Tier NYS dweller! You know first hand how beautiful this area is. We are truly blessed to live in a place with such a largely diverse wildlife population.

Lately I have been literally surrounded by the deer that are gobbling up the plethora of acorns covering the ground! So far they have been too skittish for me to capture their images. They are just so beautiful. It is wonderful that you share my love of the wildlife in this area.

Thank you so much for stopping by and for your very supportive and lovely comments. It is great to meet you!

sgbrown, I am very glad you enjoyed your walk with me! Those raccoons are awesome. They are usually around at dusk when there isn't enough light for my camera, so this was a very happy encounter in the early morning! Those babies certainly have grown since the springtime when Mama Raccoon first brought them around.

I am so very happy you stopped by. Your support is much appreciated, and thank you for the votes!

pagesvoices, so glad to see you again! Your comments evidently reappeared, and are very much appreciated. You are a bird lover as am I! I find it such a joy to watch all the wildlife around here, especially my backyard birds. Thanks for mentioning the Agway bird club. I had not heard about that, but any discount for bird seed would be very welcome at this point!

In the wintertime I use a lot more bird seed, however I do feed the birds year round. Not only does it give me a lot of enjoyment, but I know that I'm helping our songbirds to supplement their regular diet.

I really don't think there's any danger of making our birds lazy, do you?! Oh well, even if they are that's okay, too!

Thanks again for your lovely comments.

Thanks for stopping by!

You have done our area proud with this stellar production of our beautiful part of the world. I never take it for granted and it is wonderful to see you don't either.

This summer I was busy working on an article when i looked through the den room window towards the woods. I thought it was odd and rather scary to see a man in a brown coat, especially on a summer morning. It was shocking to realize it was a bear. We have been seeing more of them lately and it was fascinating.

You did a great job with this and I am proud to live where I do.

shiningirisheyes, I am so pleased you enjoyed our walk in the autumn woods! It was amazing to read that you happen to notice a man in a brown coat. The exact same thing happened to me! About 3 summers ago I heard what I thought was the UPS man leaving a package at the front door. I glanced out the window to see what I thought was a very tall UPS man checking out my hummingbird feeder! Of course it turned out to be a bear, but it's funny that we both had the same brief thought before realization set in!

Thank you so much for the your vote and very supportive and glowing comments; they are very much appreciated. I am glad we share a love of this beautiful area of the world.

Thank you Eddy for stopping by and visiting my autumn woods. I am so glad that I did this article, for now the trees are empty and all the leaves on the ground are brown. There is beauty in that as well, but it isn't the same vibrancy. Mother Nature prepares us for the cold grey and white winter with a gentle nudge in that direction after an explosion of color. I like how She works!

Thank you my friend for the vote and the share. I'm pleased that you are saving this one. That makes my day! Pearl

vbchica, so nice to have you stop by! My woods are my solace. Everyday, except during hunting season, I try to walk in my forest. (Even though we post 'no hunting' signs, there's always someone who can't read!) There's so much to discover there, all the flora and fauna, but most of all the serenity. I'm pleased you enjoyed my photos. I am shopping online for a camera with faster speed and a better optical zoom so I can capture good images of birds in flight. Thanks so much for the visit and supportive comments ;) Pearl
