The Tagalog Language

While there are over 90 different languages spoken in the Philippines, the language most widespread, used in the media, and understood by the masses is Tagalog or Filipino.

Tagalog is the native language to the Luzon island and is the dialect used by most of the people living in the nations capital, Manila.  While Tagalog is the language of the area, it is often mixed with English in the larger city areas.

Before Filipinos started mixing English with Tagalog, Spanish vocabulary was often used by the people of the Philippine Islands.  Spanish people had a large impact on the Philippine Islands as the country of Spain had economic and military control of the Philippines for roughly 400 years.
