Miss Rumphius Should Be In Every Child's Library - A Must Read Book

Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney, is one of the best children’s books available. I rate it one of the best because it teaches strong values and entertains at the same time. This is a book I read with my own daughter as she was growing up. A book she loves to this day. If you cannot afford to purchase this book, borrow a copy of it from your local library.

Miss Rumphius Teaches Values and Responsibility

Book Review: Miss Rumphius

Story and Pictures by Barbara Cooney

Miss Rumphius is a winner of the American Book Award. It is one of my favorite picture books for children. This is such a fantastic book from my perspective that I really believe it is suitable not only for children, but for people of all ages. I realize it is a picture book and intended for children under ten years old, but I believe the message is important for people of all ages to hear and remember.

The message of the book is that whatever else we do, we must also do something to make the world more beautiful. Because it is a book intended for young children, the main character, Miss Rumphius, literally makes the world more beautiful by planting flowers everywhere.

Transferring the idea of adding beauty to the world through other means such as creating a park, or an after school program for children, or helping the homeless and hungry, are concepts very young children may not grasp, but they do understand how pretty flowers can make the world more beautiful.

Once the seed is planted, that we all have a responsibility to make the world a better place, children will begin to see over time, that contributing in ways besides planting flowers also makes the world more beautiful. Of course it is helpful to raise this subject in discussion from time to time with children as they are growing up so that they do make that important connection between making the world more beautiful and making it better.

Whenever you share a book with your children it is always a good idea to discuss the book, its characters, and especially the message the book is promoting with your children. This can be a fun and rewarding learning experience for your children whether they are in public or private school, or home schooled.

Reading the book, Miss Rumphius, to children, and sharing its message is an excellent way to start the process of teaching them that we are all stewards of this planet and this world, and that we are all responsible for making it better, not only for ourselves, but for our descendents and everyone in it.

Purchase of borrow a copy of this fantastic book and then share it with a special someone in your life.

Thank you for coming by Shyron. I don't think any person is ever too old for this book. I hope you'll find one on eBay, they're often like new, and less expensive, although they don't cost that much in the book store.

Paula (fpherj48), thank you for sharing your thoughts, the pin and the tweet! I do remember Love You Forever. My daughter had over 2,000 books in her personal library and that was one of them. She still loves her books (more adult books these days ;) and she'll be 27 in a few weeks.

I think it's important to give back. We all take because nothing living can live on nothing, but I think we should give something back and try to leave the world in a little better condition than when we arrived, and I think this is perfect for getting children -- and adults too, though adults aren't usually as open to new ideas as children are, to think along the lines of enjoying this world and all it has to offer, but then giving back so that others can do the same.

I think you are one of those people who gives back with your writing. You have some wonderful articles, and I know you have a kind heart. We need kind hearts in the world, today more than ever, I think.

Au fait...I have been known to buy several of a book when I feel it's really great for children. Do you remember "Love You Forever?" by Robert Munsch? I loved that book and bought a dozen for my grandchildren and believe it or not, my adult sons and one for myself. I wrote special notes to each person on the inside cover.

(Ahhhh maybe a bit self-indulgent? I'm hoping my sons get the message and take care of me when I'm old and broken!.....LOL)

I will definitely find this book you recommend......I have faith in your opinion!!...Thanks. UP+++tweeted & Pinned.

Thanks, AuFait I have a huge collection of children's books (after having given hundreds away to schools and family) and this is NOT one of them. I have added it to my Amazon list this morning.

My grandson who will soon be five catches on quickly so he will get at least some of the larger implications. He loves flowers...when we go for a walk, he stops and smells them any time we pass them....

Thanks for the heads up

Voted up ++++ so all will know and shared and Pinned to

Thank you for stopping by Careermommy, and for leaving a comment. As stated in the description, this is a picture book. That means it's full of pictures and mostly pictures. I think it's beautifully illustrated. Hi Au fait,

Hitting all the up votes except funny on this one. The book sounds fantastic and I will do my part in promoting it by sharing it. Although I never read Miss Rumphius as a child, my parents always read books to and with us until we caught the "bug" and were able to continue on our own. We also ate dinner each night at the kitchen table and discussed our days and dreams. This is all so important when rearing children to become responsible adults. My mother also volunteered in many different areas when we were growing up...so she planted the seeds of helping and improving our world which was a great lesson. Kids learn so much by observing the actions of their parents or other adults in their lives.
