Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Relationships

Updated on April 28, 2016

Opposites attract. We've come to expect this in relationships so Jim and Jo's example doesn't surprise us. It's almost as if people who are similar end up being opposites in any event as even the smallest differences tend to become polarised in life as a couple. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can help explain differences giving a couple an enhanced sense of togetherness. The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is the most powerful personality instrument to enhance leadership capabilities, improve communication, and boost team effectiveness. MBTI looks at four dichotomies: direction of energy (Extraversion (E) - Introversion (I)), perception (Sensing (S) - Intuition (N)), decision making (Thinking (T) - Feeling (F)), and life orientation (Judging (J) - Perceiving (P)). This results in sixteen basic personality types. Understanding your personality and how you are different from others helps you lead people to success as well as to grow personally & professionally.Psychology, the scientific discipline of the study of human and animal behavior, is a young science. Prior to the late 19th century, the study of "mind" was a discipline practiced as a philosophical or spiritual endeavor. Because Psychology is a new science, we should expect a continuing evolution of psychological theory as well as tweaking and revision of existing theories.I became a Myers Briggs Practitioner because I had used the tool with my teams for about 10 years prior. I think it's a brilliant tool, which can be used to solve many team headaches. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test was developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Cook Briggs. The MBTI is designed to indicate the psychological types of our personality as described by Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, who sought to comprehend why there were individual differences among people. The MBTI test assists individuals to understand their preferences for assimilating information and making choices, as well as how a person favours focusing their concentration and how they prefer to live their existence.Ever noticed how some people frustrate us in either their lack of decisiveness or conversely their rigid, unbending sticking to schedule? Or perhaps it's tardiness on a project, or the opposite extreme of anal observance of project deadlines toward completion i.e. 'on time and on budget,' by hook or by crook?Understanding the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) helps you to improve your relationship dramatically. MBTI is based on Jung's theory of type and looks at natural preferences of different personalities. Neither type is good nor bad; they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Once you understand your and your spouse's type, and once you accept your natural preferences, you will improve communication, and you will deal constructively with conflicts. You will learn to take your relationship to the next level and enjoy a harmonious love life! The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is a self-report questionnaire designed to help people determine their personality type and is the most widely used psychological inventory in the world. The MBTI® is not a test - there are no right or wrong answers. It does not measure skill, intelligence, or mental health. If you're the type of person who's neverendingly searching the self, chances are you identify strongly with the Apollonian (NF) temperament. This person has the goal of "becoming"; becoming a better relater with people, for instance. In our high tech world, often we never meet the people we work with face-to-face. The majority of our interaction is via the Internet or over the telephone. Without the ability to see a person's body language and facial expressions we lose up to 60% of a communication's meaning between two people. The next time you're at a company meeting and don't know what to say to that guy down the hall, try, "What's your MBTI type?" That can be as good a conversation starter at corporate gatherings as "what's your sun sign" at parties. Learn how the MBTI(R) test originated and how it got to be the most popular personality type test in the world. Find out how you can take the test and use it to improve your effectiveness as a professional, manager, marketer, husband, or parent. Everyone it seems wants it all; but was is it? Having it "all" means many different things to different people. It suddenly dawned on me only recently that the only thing or 'possession' of eternal goodness is the character developed toward a full personality i.e. one that can embrace every person and every situation possible with love, respect and understanding, in a word, unconditionality. We're experienced practitioners of Myers-Briggs instruments. So it was with great interest that we read two articles by Emily Yoffee in the commentary section of the Chicago Sun-Times last week. Using their biographies and Myers-Briggs related research, Ms. Yoffee, "typed" the presidential candidates in interesting and on target candidate profiles. Career assessment tools like the MBTI can help you shift your focus away from minimizing weaknesses - many of which can never be totally eliminated anyway - and concentrating instead on building strength. Self knowledge and understanding of the sort provided by the Myers Briggs will help you in all areas of your life. But when it comes to your career transition this information is often extraordinarily helpful: heading off detours down paths with no future and setting you on the road to personal success and fulfillment in an occupation powerfully aligned with your unique talents, preferences and personality. One of the most useful tips I can give to a writer is this: be a scholar of people. What do I mean by this? To have a realistic story, you must have realistic characters.Having children is a life-changing experience and often a time of reckoning for mothers-to-be, particularly with regard to their careers. Whilst most employers are sympathetic to parenthood and employment law has improved tremendously over the past few years, there are still many challenges to be faced by new mothers in the world of work.I am often asked by clients to assist with a working relationship which has stalled or even worse, one which has broken down completely. Occasionally this stalling is as a result of different personalities simply not understanding each other. A frequent cause is the Big Picture Thinker clashing with a Specific Detail Thinker. Each is a valuable contributor to an organisation and if either is stuck and inflexible in their thinking each becomes incapable of understanding or communicating with the other.Being aware is all about 'knowing' that there is something else other than just being here and doing life! Of course being self-aware is when one is conscious that it is their own responsibility to 'do the work' on the areas of life that show themselves needing growth. As a young child our social biofeedback is through parental mirroring. This creates our own emotional self-awareness and self-control so that we can start to find out our own identity. It is not until we grow up and start experiencing life that we start to recognise that this learnt behaviour either may or may not serve us well.Managing conflict with coworkers doesn't have to be difficult. In this article are eight simple rules that should both help you deal with conflict and improve your relationships at work.Motivation is described by psychologist Shay McConnon as 'the inner desire to take action'. Tap into people's motivation and you will strike gold! Do opposites really attract? More importantly, can they stay together? Learn how your Myers Briggs personality type determines your compatibility with your partner. Why do some customers love your sales approach, while others run away? Using the secrets of Myers Briggs personality type, you can discover how your customers want to be sold, and develop your ability to sell to anyone.Understand your partner and improve your communication with the simple system of personality type. Find out where your differences lie, and how to use them to create a stronger relationship.Working relationships can be fragile - especially in the workplace where they are often built and destroyed by the actions we take. Building healthy, secure and harmonious relationships is important not only to us personally, but also to underpin the success of the organisation we work for.Business is about people and if we want to achieve excellence in those relationships, it is critical that we know, recognize and leverage the strengths of people's personality types and know how to supplement the weaknesses.
