Noetics-The Science of Consciousness

The best answer to the question, what are the Noetic Sciences?, comes from "A Proposal for a Theoretical Approach to Consciousness," by George Zarkadakis. His contribution to the new science of Noetics and the study of consciousness is unparalled. Dr. Karkadakis also has worked very hard to let the general public in on the secrets of consciousness and the science of Noetics. Dr. Zaradakis received his Phd in Artificial Intelligence from London University at the age of 24 and has worked as a scientific researcher. He launched the science magazine "Focus" and is heavily involved in getting recent developments in science across to the lay public. He says:

"The study of consciousness has intensified of the past few years. New technological developments in measurement and computer simulation have enabled the closer investigation of one of the most mysterious phenomena in nature, namely, the subjective experience of human awareness...

Consciousness may be a fundamental property of nature."

Noetics studies consciousness, apart from the brain. Noetics is the study of the non-anatomical part of consciousness. Science has previously studied the human brain, it's anatomical properties and neurochemical functions. Science has studied this subject with the same quantitative, objective approach used consistently for a century in scientific testing, but ran into a problem.

Human beings have a subjective consciousness that interacts with the experiments, and affects the environment.

Thoughts can (remotely-- look Ma, no hands!):

  • Affect Random Event Generators
  • Change the temperature of water
  • Change the direction fish swim
  • Affect the growth and behavior of living systems: bacteria, yeast algae, lice, chicks, mice, gerbils, rats, cats and dogs.

There is a mass of data proving conclusively that thoughts affect matter, directly. So many experiments (with varying degrees of scientific rigor) have been conducted that the wealth of material is too large to go into exhaustively, here. There is one experiment I'll describe in detail a little later on, just because it's so compelling.

Noetics studies thoughts as separate and distinct entities that have energy. Thought energy can affect, independently of physical manipulations, all manner of physical objects. This part of the science of Noetics and the study of human consciousness has produced amazing results.

Mckenny-subatomic particle

Human consciousness is a substance outside the human body. It's a highly ordered energy capable of changing the physical world. We all knew this, once upon a time. This knowledge is old. It's the esoteric core of all the world's religions, East and West, ancient and modern.

Aldous Huxley describes:

"Perennial wisdom" that "recognizes a divine Reality substantial to the world of things and lives in minds..."

Whether it is a scientist studying measurements affected by psi (psychic phenomena) in controlled testing; whether it is a doctor, once again amazed at the effectiveness of a placebo delivered to his patient; or whether it arises from a personal, intuitive experience, the profound insight in a fundamental way is that our belief systems create our reality.

This wisdom is old.

Hindus knew it, as they walked across fire, lay on a bed of nails, or handled poisonous snakes with impunity; and lived, in comfortable serenity, on less than 400 calories a day.

Christians knew it, all the miracles of Jesus and His special healing gifts were explicitly part of this phenomena. Christ told his disciples that if they had faith as much as a grain of mustard seed, they could move a mountain.

This wisdom is new.

That our perception of reality affects reality, or indeed determines our reality, was the counter-intuitive product of quantum physics.

The conclusions scientists made that at its most elemental level, physical matter isn't solid or stable. It isn't anything at all, yet. Subatomic reality resembles not the solid and reliable state of being described by classical scientists, but an ephemeral prospect of unlimited options. So capricious are the tiniest bits of nature that quantum physicists have to make do with a crude approximation of the truth--these tiniest bits are described by a mathematical range of possibilities.

At the quantum level, reality is as shaky as unset Jello.

The quantum theories developed by Bohr, Heisenberg, and a host of other scientists over the last thirty-odd years rocks the very foundation of the Newtonian view of matter as something discrete and self-contained.

Matter at its most fundamental can't be divided into independently existing units or even fully described. Matter has no meaning in isolation: it exists only in a web of dynamic relationships. Quantum particles influence each other, without any impetus.

The universe isn't a storehouse of static, separate objects, but a unified organism composed of interconnected energy fields (quantum particles) in a continuous state of becoming. At it's most infinitesimal level, our universe resembles a vast network of information energy with all it's components continuously interacting, and changing.

The only thing, at the subatomic level, dissolving the cloud of probability into something solid and measurable is the presence of an observer.

Once a scientist decides to have a closer look at a subatomic particle, the entity which previously existed only as potential, collapses into something measurable.

Noetics shows us a truth at once so old and new: Perception determines reality.

A sizable body of research now exists, which has been carried on by scientist in prestigious institutions all over the world, shows that thoughts affect matter, remotely.
This evidence shows that thoughts exist outside our bodies with an astonishing power to change the physical realities around us. Every thought we have is tangible energy with the power to transform.

These events were once simply legends: now, scientists in the field of Noetics have proven these seemingly physically impossible things to be true.

John Husted, a professor at Birkbeck College at the University of London, conducted this Noetics experiment:

He suspended latchkeys from the ceiling of the laboratory. His subjects were children. He stationed them at varying distances, from 3 to 10 feet away from their target key, so they could not possibly have any direct physical contact. He then instructed the children to try to bend their keys by thoughts alone.

During these sessions,Dr. Husted observed and recorded not only the keys swaying, and sometimes fracturing, but he was also getting voltage spikes from the keys, which he was also recording--up to ten volts, the limit of the recorder.

What does this mean to us? Can we put this information to good use? Can we "intend", and therefore create, a better world, out of our pure thoughts alone?

I am still studying this subject and will be for quite some time. It's a lot to take in, it's a lot to digest. I have several books on the subject and have sniffed around all over the place online. There is a wealth of material out there. It takes a lot of thinking about.

My natural skepticism says, it all sounds like wishful thinking. It sounds like pie in the sky. I smell the proverbial magic wand in here, somewhere.

But then I think, all those Italians who wanted to burn Galileo at the stake for saying the world was round instead of flat and the sun, not the earth, was in the center of the solar system, well, they were skeptics, too, weren't they?

Noetics is the new frontier in science. We may find more exploring the world of the mind, human consciousness and all its attributes, then we have ever discovered before in physical science. Noetics takes us on a journey to explore the science of consciousness. We've only begun to tap its possibilities.

Thanks, Raymond. I'm still working on looking into this. It's very fascinating. There seems to be new evidence every day for the power of our thoughts, and the reality of being able to manipulate the physical world by the power of our thoughts.

Whereas Theory ... is the Rational and Irrational Speculation, about The Reality ... within the Known ... At times Theory gets 'close enough' to Reality ... but, such proximity does not define The Reality.

Let me tell you the Reality, of all the 'neo' Sciences ... Neotics being one ... a name, given to an Awareness that has sprung forth from material concepts, promoted by the 'ultimate Nano states' of Matter, defined by such as the Strings, theory ...

I ask you, a simple Question about Optics ... it will shown, how far your Sciences ... and Neotics ... Know of The Reality .. for in its answering ... you will read the 'new' Theories ... because, your Academicians cannot answer

My question is ...

"How do we always see the 'correct ... meaning, the right side up image, of an object, when, our eye's lens, focuses the wrong side up ... image on our Retinas ... "

I look forward to Neotics and Strings specialists Theories. Stay with me and Believe.

Hi again P7, this subject fascinates me also and figures in a lot of my writing. I like the definition of faith --the kind that moves mountains--from the Bible that says: "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." At one point, Jesus is described as "being before all things and holding all things together" (at the quantum level?)Colossions 1:17

I often think that if we can conceive of something there is a way to bring it to reality. I hope we all are conceiving like your shortest poem. =:)

I have been a practitioner of using intent and visualisation since I was a child, to reach outcomes which I desired to happen or manifest, always believing the outcome to be automatically within my reach.

One of the most notable was the remote healing of a sick child, who literally got up and walked out of his home to play football the instant I was forced to make a prayer on the other side of the world. This was corroborated by his shocked parents on my return to Britain, once we had worked out time differences.

I was in a cathedral (as a tourist and non-believer in religion) but was forced to kneel and concentrate on the child, specifically his deliverance from that which plagued him and had baffled conventional medicine for years.

I open your hubpage and i see your hubpage is very fabulous as compare

to other hubpages , It is attractive and fascinate blog your content

is very impressive. The origin lies in our childhood when our mind-set was

frozen into a conditioned attitude to advice from all elders. Not encouraged to

exercise independent choice then, we are scared to do it even now.

Understanding this fact with deep feeling and the havoc it plays with

our lives, is the first step we need to take to be self-possessed and

self assured. A beginning should be made with small things. The effort

should be kept up until we catch up with bigger things. Wisely has it

been said, “Take care of little things, big things will take cared of

themselves”. The crying need is to embark on this path right here and

now. career guidance

On my bookshelves are the classical works on gravity, quantummechanics, the works.

There is also a new volume, titled "The Final Theory". It is purely fysics and it does away with outdated concepts.

The book shows the faults in Newton's reasoning and the flaws in Einstein's math's.

So sorry, Sir Isaac and dr. Albert, there is no such thing as Gravity and the whole of Quantum Mechanics is just a bunch of speculative mathematics. Non-existent. It's time for science to come off their 19th-century horses and start reading the 21st-century mindbogglers.

I am a professional reductionist and yet I am dumbfounded by a colleague and friend who can read my aura and take away my headaches just by directing energy-streams.

...There is more, Horatio...

Truly, they may not have burned Galileo, but they burned "witches" at the stake, and these were merely women who used herbs to heal the sick. The sad part is that imagination has created out of these stories unbelievable powers... Or did they truly have power. The bible called them a term that most literally meant wise, before it was changed to witch. Old and wise. Odd why would you want to destroy someone who had ancient wisdom, unless you were afraid.

I recall an experiment made with two groups of people. One group got regular beer and the other got light beer with no alcohol. Still both groups ended up pretty "drunk" and their results in tests during the experiment were very similar. So the mind can play tricks on us and even cause a physical effect.

Grey Matter, I don't think you're going to find it online. The experiment took place several years ago. All the references I've found are in books: The Intention Experiment, by Lynne McTaggart is the main source.

You could also send a letter of enquiry to the University, and I believe they'd answer it.

I agree with Veronica Allen to some extent. I do believe that we are forms of energy and keep emitting vibrations into the universe. It is quite possible that we are able to affect our surroundings (unknowingly) in some way as the energy centers in our bodies help to regulate the inflow and outflow of energy in and out of our bodies. So if the inflow affects our body system, the outflow should affect everything around us. Seems logically correct. I found this hub very interesting.

Thank you all for the comments. Most interesting, what other people think of these ideas. Yes, the science is valid. The latchkey test was recorded under rigorous conditions by scientists at London University. The quantum physics science is from Nobel-prize winners. The few actual scientific statements I've made here are valid and well-known to the scientific community for the last thirty odd years, ever since Heisenberg (who won the Nobel prize)and Bohr formulated what's now known as the Copenhagen Interpretation-a collection of ideas that are the begiining of The Grand Unifying Principle and state "every subatomic particle is not a solid and stable thing, but exists simply as a potential of any one of its future selves"...

I've just skimmed the bare surface here, and have got a little bit further in my reading, but have much to study before I come to any conclusions for my own use.

I really recommend the Zarkadakis paper. You'll see--the science is valid. It makes for slightly heavy reading but you'll find out it's worth while.

Yes, we can change reality to some extent with our thoughts. That much is true, and it is mind-boggling, and I now beter understand how that can happen after looking into Noetics. To what extent? For what purpose? Those are the next questions.

And yes, that is the intuitive basis for our sense of the numinous and our spiritual beliefs, which have been with us since before recorded history, in one fashion or another. Noetics validates our spiritual lives, in a certain way.

I'm interested, too, Jewels, in that Subtle Bodies book. I haven't read it yet but have come across the book and the ideas, and found that interesting, too. I wondered as I was looking into Noetics where we put the emotional life we all have? But, I thought, one thing at a time. There's so much more for me to learn. This is a vast subject--much bigger than I first thought.

Feline Prophet profile image

Feline Prophet 6 years ago from India

I only recently heard about Noetics courtesy Dan Brown's new book 'The Lost Symbol' and I was quite intrigued. And while the thought that we can actually change reality with our thoughts rather boggles the mind, isn't it what spiritualists over the centuries have always been telling us?

Jewels profile image

Jewels 6 years ago from Australia

There are problems when thoughts are the major source of our reality. Thoughts are not the substance that allows feeling - that's done with the body so I'm hoping this tactile and most human of abilities doesn't get lost in all the study. There is a major body of work by Dr Samuel Sagan on Subtle Bodies which you may be interested in. Additionally he also is undertaking a major ongoing study of consciousness which includes a language to map it.

Catherine R profile image

I find the whole area of quantum physics to be fascinating. And I do think we understand only a fraction of how our universe works. I am open to the idea of our consciousness being more powerful than we think but this experiment of Husted and the keys? Is this experiment for real? Has it been written up in any academic journals? The problem I have is that there are some suspect individuals who bring a bad name to a valid area of research. Did you ever see that movie - "What the Bleep do we know?" which attempts to answer quantum physics questions but doesn't have a single real expert in it. But I have not read those other links of yours yet - I will read them now. You are right about poor old Galileo though. We should remain open but cautious.

Veronica Allen profile image

I like you am skeptical of this theory. I do feel at some extent, that one's psyche can play a role in say - one's health (studies have shown that people who have a better disposition are healthier and get over illness faster than their more grumpier peers), but I'm not so sure about one's consciousness being able to effect their surroundings. If that were the case then, I would think that more people would "think" the world into a better place.
