What's in the Name
While the other planets are all named after Greek Gods, our planet is not. It doesn't even derive its name from Greek. Rather the name 'Earth' comes from Anglo-Saxon and means ground or soil.
The Shiny Planet
Our Planet is the brightest planet in the Solar System. This is because sunlight is reflected from the water in Earth's Oceans.
Tectonic Plates
Earth is the only planet in the Solar System that features tectonic plates. Tectonic plates have not been discovered on any other planet in the entire Solar System.
Lightning Fast Earth
Earth is lightning fast. It is rotating around the Sun at speeds of around 67,000 miles per hour. That means, we all are moving at 67,000 miles per hour.
Not So Round
We've always been made to believe that the Earth is round. But actually it it not. No, it isn't flat either. Rather the Earth is a Geoid (oblate spheroid). This just means that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. Rather it is flat at the poles.
Water World
The oceans cover almost 70% of Earth's surface. More than 90% of these oceans are unexplored. This means that we have not even seen half of our own planet.
Light Minutes
Our Earth is at a distance of approximately 93 million miles from the sun. This means that light from the sun takes about 8 minutes and 19 seconds to reach us.
The Wonderful Atmosphere
Our atmosphere is not just a bunch of gases. It's made up of about seven different layers with each layer having its own specific function. For examples, the first one is the troposphere. This is where all the weather activities take place.
Varying Gravity
Gravity varies from place to place. This is due to the fact that the mass of Earth is unevenly distributed. This means that you will weigh lighter or heavier from place to place.
The Densest
Do you know that you're standing on the densest planet in the Solar System? Yes, our planet is the densest of all the other planets. It is believed that the iron in the Earth's core is what makes it so dense.
