Famous Actors Who Also Sing
It's not surprising that an actor might also be a talented and accomplished musician, but what may surprise you are the actors that actually are singers and songwriters.
Milla Jovovich
When she's not busy blowing zombies away, or being the Fifth Element, she's writing and singing. This accomplished actress and model has yet another trick up her sleeve.
Milla Jovovich was born in the Ukraine to a Serbian doctor and Russian actress. She's known for her modeling since 1988 and her work in films such as The Fifth Element, Resident Evil, The Fourth Kind, and even played Joan of Arc in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.
According to MillaJ.com, Milla toured for 6 months after the release of her first musical album, The Divine Comedy, in 1994. She had signed with SBK records after they heard a demo she had recorded.
More recently, her newest single, Electric Sky, was released in May of 2012. A brand new EP will be released, but the date has yet to be announced. She has also been noted to collaborate with Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle on occasion and that is pretty sick.
You can check out one of her new singles "Let You Go" here.
Jennifer Love Hewitt
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" American beauty Jennifer Love Hewitt has recorded four studio albums spanning ten years from 1992 - 2002 ending with her album titled BareNaked which peaked at #37 on the US charts. The actor, director, producer, and author has said here:
"I am writing a new album as we speak," Hewitt tells Wall of Sound. Just don't expect it to sound like shiny, happy teen pop. "I'd like to do a bit of a female David Gray [number], with a little Tracy Chapman-Jewel feel to it. Like rhythm and blues, singer-songwriter stuff."
Her next album may be released as early as next year.
Jada Pinkett Smith
This petite beauty from Baltimore, MD has a wild side and shows it well when she performs with her metal band Wicked Wisdom. When she's not gracing the silver screen she may be seen head banging on stage and even performed at the 2005 Ozzfest. Sharon Osborne on her performance, "I was blown away. When you see and hear Jada with her band it's apparent that she has nothing but love and respect for this genre of music." Star husband, Will Smith, was there in support during the tour.
My personal favorite track from Wicked Wisdom is "Something Inside of Me". It's very brutal.
Kevin Bacon
Kevin Bacon, one of six children in a Philly based family is most known for his role in "Footloose." He once told Cosmopolitan, "The message I got was 'The arts are it. Business is the devil's work. Art and creative expression are next to godliness."
The Bacon Brothers, a folk rock band, was formed back in 1995. As their name suggests, it's a duo of actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael. On a 2006 episode of the Bravo hit Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the Bacon Brothers performed with Michael as the featured "straight guy."
The duo is known for their great work in the community.
Jared Leto
It may not come as such a big surprise to most that actor Jared Leto is a musician. He's been the lead vocalist for rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars since 2002 and has had a great music career. But back in 94, he was the brooding-eyed Jordan Catalano in the TV teen drama, My So-Called Life. Prior to Thirty Seconds to Mars, he's been in great films such as American Psycho, Fight Club, Panic Room, and Requiem of a Dream.
In 1996 and 1997 Leto was named one of the "50 Most Beautiful People" by People magazine and continues to dazzle us all with his baby blues on and off stage.
Lindsay Lohan
No matter what you think of Lindsay Lohan now, there's no denying that she's a talented recording artist. Most reviews were mixed with a general consensus that she's not a bad singer. Just nothing special. I, however, LOVED her single "Rumors" and stand by her musically. According to Entertainment Weekly, the young bombshell who was signed with Hollywood Records peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 in 2004 selling 261,762 copies of her debut album "Speak" in its first week.
Now if that ain't at least notable, I don't know what is.
Julliette Lewis
I will do my best to attempt to maybe be unbiased about this next actor/singer, but she's seriously one of my favorite actors and musicians. Juliette Lewis, the edgy actress known for her roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Dusk Till Dawn, and Strange Days.
This L.A. girl also appeared in the American treasure "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation" as Audrey Griswald and truly broke out as an actress in my opinion in "Natural Born Killers."
Up until 2009 she toured with her band Julliette and the Licks. Since then, she's recorded an album named Terra Incognita which was released in 2009.
Her incredible unrelenting energy on stage shows that she's truly a musician and artist in mind and heart and will probably continue doing music for years to come.
Taryn Manning
This Orange is the New Black starlet and "Born Uniqorn" clothing brand co-owner has also got a set of pipes on her.
Back in 2003, her and her brother formed a duo called Boomkat and were almost successfully signed with American Idol judge Randy Jackson. Since then, she's started her own solo career and in 2012 released a single world-wide called "Send Me Your Love." I really like that track. It's an easy listen, but there's something so unique about her voice. She doesn't try to be something she's not as she shows also in her acting.
The Hustle and Flow actress says that Boomkat will eventually get back together and find another label to get signed to. All the while, music will continue to be a big part of her life.
Scarlett Johansson
This stunning New Yorker has graced the silver screen a multitude of times. Since her acclaimed role in Ghost World Scarlett has had steady and impressive work to show for herself. Most recently, she played a super hero, Black Widow, in the 2012 Joss Whedon's Avengers movie and a level-headed girlfriend, Barbara Sugarman, in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's film, "Don Jon."
There was nothing critically stellar about Starlett Johannson's singing, particularly concerning her album released in 2008 comprised of mostly Tom Waits covers and was met with mixed reviews. I will say, I found her vocalizations surprisingly haunting- in a good way.
Robert Downey Jr.
We know him. We love him (for the most part). He's also got a pretty good voice. Here's a video of him recording "Man Like Me."
Drug addiction and all around bad-boyism would usually be enough to destroy any type of professional entertainment career, but RDJ has proven that there's no past experience you can't arise and become greater from- like a phoenix. This Manhattan-born actor has been in countless movies, shows, and commercials and starred in the 2003 music comedy crime film, The Singing Detective, playing Dan Dark.
Sing, RDJ, sing. Sing until your goateed heart is content.
