Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Released 2008
Movie Review
In the action packed movie Hellboy II : The Golden Army , released in 2008, the character Hellboy (played by Ron Perlman) returns as the do-good demon looking hero who saves mankind from monster mayhem and evil. We learn right away why his side kick John Murphy (played by Rupert Evans) is no longer with them. An amusing vehicle used to allow a more interesting character Johann Strauss (took 3 people to be this character: John Alexander and James Dodd handled the special designed suit and ethereal apparition aspects of Johann Strauss; his voice was furnished by Seth MacFarlane) to join Hellboy's team. The entire movie focuses around a very Gaelic legend about a Golden Army that is a major threat. Once again Hellboy is called upon to save the day!
Admittedly, not as good as the first movie, but still worthy of viewing. Hellboy II: The Golden Army has two romantic subplots. One is very adorable between Hellboy and Liz Sherman (their relationship becomes more serious). Romance does indeed blossom for Abe Sapien.
Prince Naude (Luke Goss) is the antagonist of this film, while his twin sister Princess Naula (Anna Walton) sides with Hellboy's team to combat her brother's desire to rule the domain they are from, which has fairy-folk plus legendary folk like trolls, and the human world (ours).
Good to see five of the actors from the first movie of Hellboy : Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), Sam Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) and Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholn (John Hurt). All of them still great in their roles! Luke Goss and Anna Walton were a great addition to the cast of Hellboy II: The Golden Army ; excellent actors.
The special effects and action scenes were excellent. This film had awesome and superior visual effects that were truly entertaining. Glad I did not miss them!
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is on DVD and the length is 1 hour and 50 minutes. One does not notice the time passing due to its fast pace. My personal recommendation, as a mother and grandmother, is this film is not for young children and properly rated at PG-13. There are many scenes that could upset a 12 year old and younger.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a good movie for parents to watch with teenagers during their quality family time. This is a great film for those who enjoy comic heroes as well as reading or collecting comic books. I gave this movie a "thumbs up."
Enjoy!
