Movie Review

Hellboy, released in 2004, based on Mike Mignola's cult comic book series, can be found on DVD. This film is brimming with action and adventure with romance as a sub-plot. It basically is a comic hero movie with a twist. The main character Hellboy looks like a demon, but has a very big heart, fights on the side of good, and hunts supernatural monsters/predators. I caught myself rooting for Hellboy, which in my opinion, makes it an awesome movie.

The cast is a great mix. Ron Perlman (who starred in the television series Beauty and the Beast in the 80's) stars as the main character Hellboy. He proves once again that he is indeed an excellent actor. Way to go Ron! Also in the movie Hellboy are actors Selma Blair (as Liz Sherman, Hellboy's pyrotechnic girlfriend), Rupert Evans (plays John Myers, new guy on the block working with Hellboy), John Hurt (excellently portrays Trever "Broom" Bruttenholn, the one who raised Hellboy upon finding him in Scotland after the Nazi's opened a "portal"), Karl Roden (as the antagonist Grigors aka Rasputin who keeps coming back from the dead), Bridget Hodson (as Elsa, the lover of Grigors, who helps Grigors return by following Grigors instructions), and Ladislay Beran (expertly plays Kroenen, a robotized-man). The protagonists are an odd bunch for allies. The antagonists are a unique blend of nasty.

Hellboy did not have the blood and gore one would expect from this movie's title and description. Stretched my imagination, yet enjoyed the entertainment value. Great special effects. Loved the 'looks can be deceiving; what matters is inside of a person' message given. Wholesome is how I would describe the film Hellboy.

Hellboy is worth the 2 hours 12 minutes in length. This grandma and mother counsels this movie is unsuitable for minors under 13 years of age. There are scenes with evil deeds done by the "bad" guys that might be too disturbing for children. Parental guidance is strongly recommended.

I endorse Hellboy for those who enjoy a good comic hero movie. Those who prefer action adventure genre films, give this one a try. This movie is great for a teenage family fun time with popcorn and hot dogs!

Enjoy the movie!
