Interview with Channing Tatum

Yes, you read that correctly. This is an interview with the handsome young actor, Channing Tatum. Now I know you must be thinking how in the world was I able to interview Chan – that’s his nickname – in person? Right?

Simple! Just as I read that thought in your mind, I was able to read his mind using only one inexpensive item you probably have somewhere in your kitchen. What inexpensive item? you are asking. See, I read your mind again. The item … aluminum foil.

When fashioned into a simple skullcap of my design and placed securely on your head, you can read minds. Trust me. And you thought foil only worked to keep aliens from using extra-terrestrial mind-controlling rays on your brain.

The Interview

me – Hello, Mr. Tatum. I can sense that you are wearing the aluminum foil headpiece I sent you. I’m delighted to meet you via my new innovative brain-wave equipment. Can you spare some time for a short interview?

Channing Tatum – Can I promote the new film I’ve produced about a male exotic dancer? And you can call me Chan – that’s my nickname.

me – Yes, I know – I read your mind. Thank you. I’d be honored to learn more about your new movie. Would you tell me a little about your background first?

Didja know:

Wetumpka is famous. True! A meteorite estimated to be over 1,000 feet wide hit the hills just east of what is now downtown Wetumpka about 80 million years ago. The impact of the meteorite blasted a crater five miles wide now known as the famous Wetumpka Crater.

Kay and Glenn Tatum
Kay and Glenn Tatum

Early Years

Chan – No problem. My real name is Channing Matthew Tatum and I was born April 26, 1980 in the thriving metropolis of Cullman, Alabama, population about 14,000.

Later we moved to the big city (laughing) – Wetumpka, Alabama, population 6,500.

My mom, Kay, worked for the airlines and my dad, Glenn, worked in construction. When I was six, we moved to Mississippi and I grew up near a Mississippi River bayou. That was a great place for a kid.

“All the rattlesnakes and alligators a boy could possibly chase … and fishing every day … and Pop Warner football league, stuff like that.”

me – Did you have a favorite subject in school?

Chan – Actually, I had two favorites: sports and girls.

I’ve always been a natural athlete and enjoyed playing football, baseball, soccer and track in high school. And practicing kung fu. Bruce Lee is my hero.

me – And the girls?

Chan“They were always my biggest distraction.” As a teen, I loved in Tampa, Florida where I earned the distinction of ‘Most Athletic at Tampa Catholic High School.’

me – Did you mean to say, ‘lived’ instead of ‘loved’?

Chan – Not exactly.

Channing in pensive pose
Channing in pensive pose

Professional Experience

me – When you graduated from high school in 1998, were you offered a football scholarship to Glenville State College in West Virginia?

Chan – Yes, but I turned it down. I wanted to see more of the world so I returned to Florida and started working at odd jobs.

me – I sense that one of these odd jobs was working as a male stripper.

Chan – I prefer the term, exotic dancer. I worked at a local nightclub using the name, Chan Crawford. I enjoyed so many, er … interesting experiences I decided that one day I would make a semi-autobiographical movie about that fascinating profession. That’s what my new movie, “Magic Mike,” is all about.

After four months – the work was very demanding (snickers) – I moved to Miami where, believe it or not, a talent scout for a model agency discovered me as I was walking on the street. I kid you not. With my toned body (chuckling) and six foot one height, I was hired for photo shoots representing Nautica, Gap, Armani, and Abercrombie and Fitch, among others.

Chan in Pepsi Cola ad

Chan in Mountain Dew ad

me – Didn’t I see you in some great television commercials, too?

Chan – I did them for Pepsi and also Mountain Dew.

I later realized that working as a model “was good training for an acting career.”

Did you ever watch the singer, Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” music video? I received $400 for that gig in 2000.

“My modeling career made my life, and my family's life, a lot easier … I've been able to explore life, and I've found that I love art, I love writing, I love acting … And I've been given the chance to go out and see the world … nor everyone gets that chance".

Chan and Jenna in "Step Up"

Acting Career

me – What was your first job as an actor?

Chan - In 2004 I had a role in the television series: ‘CSI: Miami.’ My athletic ability won me a role as a basketball player in the movie, ‘Coach Carter,’ opposite Samuel L. Jackson in 2005. And I had a leading role in the teen-themed film, ‘She’s the Man’ in 2006.

me – I remember, Chan, seeing you in the movie, ‘Step Up,’ in 2006 and I could not believe your dancing ability. Your moves were so exceptional I thought a stand-in – a professional dancer – was performing those amazing dances for you.

Chan – That was my break-out film. I played the part of a cocky hip-hop dancer who partners with a ballerina-in-training played by the actress, Jenna Dewan. And all those difficult, athletic moves were mine.

me – What was your first dramatic film role?

Chan – My performance in ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ opposite Robert Downey, Jr. in 2006 earned me an Independent Spirit Award nomination for ‘Best Supporting Actor’.

Chan and Jenna
Chan and Jenna

me – I will list all your other films at the end of this article. Now tell me about Jenna.

Chan – I met Jenna when we worked together in ‘Step Up’ in 2006. We began dating after the film was completed, and became engaged in early September 2008 in Maui, Hawaii. On July 11, 2009, we were married in Malibu, California.

me – What does Jenna think about your starring in the risqué role of a male stripper, uh, I mean, exotic dancer in ‘Magic Mike’?

Chan – Jenna is thrilled. She told ‘E! News’ that “... the movie is amazing … he's so good in it. I grew up as a dancer and Chan is an amazing dancer. But there were moments in that movie where I was like, I gotta give it to you – I could not have done that.”

Magic Mike 2012

Matt Bomer, Chan, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey
Matt Bomer, Chan, Joe Manganiello and Matthew McConaughey

Didja know:

Chan suffered a severe burn injury to his 'you know what' while filming ‘The Eagle’ in Scotland. A crew member poured boiling water down his wetsuit to keep him warm while shooting scenes in the ice-cold river. But he forgot to dilute the boiling water with cold water! Tatum said: "It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life … but I am now 100% recovered.” Praise God!

Magic Mike

me – What is the movie about?

Chan – It takes place in the erotic world of male exotic dancers.

Magic Mike (me) tutors a young dancer called The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) in the fine arts of stripping, picking up women, partying, and making easy money.

me – With a plot like that, it’s guaranteed to be a blockbuster. Who are the other hunks, you’ll pardon the expression, in the film?

Chan – Matthew McConaughey plays the role of the strip club owner and Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello are two of my fellow strippers, er, … dancers. The director is Steven Soderbergh.

me – I know you and Jenna and three friends have formed a production company, 33andOut Productions. Do you plan to continue acting in movies?

Chan"I know I'm not the best actor, but I hope my characters are getting better. I really don't want to be in any more movies that I don't produce.

I don't have any interest in not being on the ground floor of creating it … what I really want to do is direct."

meBest of luck to you, Chan, and Jenna, and may you reach all your goals. Thank you for the interview.

You may remove your aluminum foil cap now, 'Magic Mike’.

Delighted, Alastar, that I could introduce you to Chan - one of Alabama's proudest products. Despite his early stripper image, he appers to be a likeable, down-to-earth fellow who has won the hearts of many movie-goers all over the planet.

Oh my goodness, what kissable lips and cuddle-able body. Yummy! Lol!

Drbj, your sense of humor makes this interview a delightful read.

Well, once again it is time for me to accept the fact that I cannot have everything I want...

Tralalala....

Voted up and gorgeous, delicious, heartwarming, thrilling, exotic entertainment....

(Oh, my poor soul! Fortunately my mother keeps me in her prayers -)

Hi Drbj, quite the Professional Interview. It was HOt, Hot, Hot! Channing is one Cool Guy. He seems to have the Hollywood Star quality LOOKS and Talent. I have Enjoyed a few of his Movies...and he's GOOD to his Parents...How Neat is that! And YOU had the Talent to invent the "Aluminum Foil Skullcap" YOU ARE SO FUNNY & CLEVER!

Amy Becherer profile image

Quite a body of work, drbj. Your interview trumps many I've read in Elle, Marie Claire and Vogue. And, those were done in person with the celebrity, sans the aluminum cap! Once again, your imagination, intellect and sense of humor makes a mix that leaves you and the reader both winners.

PegCole17 profile image

Well this is one fine looking fellow. And your sense of humor in interviewing him was hilarious. Thanks for a good time here.

Love the interview, but I am a bit worried. I never head of him until now. Up and awesome.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Now take it easy, christopher. Sit back in your easy chair and watch just one video per hour. Rest your rapidly beating heart in between viewings. Chan is a 'seriously gorgeous' guy as you put it and so pleasant he would bear tremendous guilt if anything happened to you. Guaranteed. Thanks for the visit.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

That IS the right word, Martie, Chan is YUMMY! Kissable lips, muscles of steel and a sweet personality. Who could ask for more? All of the above is why I wanted to introduce him to readers who may not be aware of his relatively new popularity in American movies.

No, unfortunately we cannot have everything we want but that has never stopped us from wanting. Right?

Thank you for your heartwaming and sublime adjectives, the Up vote, and enjoying my generally offbeat sense of humor.

Warning! If you mother reads this hub you may have competition in her prayers. Heh, heh.

drbj profile image

I knew we had a lot in common, b. We both believe Chan is Hot and Cool at the same time. He does have the looks, talent and charisma, I believe, to be a Superstar. Then we can say we knew him when.

Thank you for appreciating my talent in inventing the foil 'brain wave' skullcap. I'm thinking of resurrecting Steve Jobs to help with the marketing of same.

And thanks for your gracious comments: 'talent, funny and clever' are among my all-time favorites. Are you mising Florida yet?

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Wow, Amy, these comments are just getting betterer and betterer. A comparison to personal interviews in 'Elle, Marie Claire and Vogue'? My cup runneth over, m'dear, thanks to you.

Of course the ingenious foil skullcap did help - have to give credit where credit is due. But I do thank you for your sublime comments - you do say the nicest things!

I see more of his dad in him as he gets older. I have seen GI Joe (and going to see the new one too), but for some reason I didn't realize it was him in the movie. Wow, he has made a lot of movies too. Enjoyed the story.

I AM SO FRUSTRATED! First that I married my husband instead of Channing Tatum...oh well. My husband is pretty darn cool anyway. But I am frustrated that somehow hubpages is messed up in that I never get sent those pesky emails letting me know when my favorite hubbers write a new hub. I have to remind myself to check in on my faves. I had to find out on another hub in the comment section about your interview with Channing and I am frustrated that I was not the first to comment on this particular hub because I am a Channing fan. Before I check your old hubs- got any on Gerard Butler? Oh my!

And by the way...you did not have to include the caption where it says under the pic "Channing displaying toned physique". Well Duh! I can't wait to see the movie Magic Mike!

drbj profile image

Hi, Peg, how delightful to see you're here. I do agree - Chan is a fine-looking fellow and seems to be a really nice guy. Thanks for appreciating my sense of humor. Hilarity is what I am to provide. If you had a good time here the pleasure was all mine believe me.

drbj profile image

bp - I've got to drag you out of the Inn more to the movies. Channing is the newest ' hot item' on the Hollywood circuit right now. Women love him and his movies make money. Need I say more? So happy you loved the interview and thanks for the Up and awesome.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Channing has two very good-looking parents so it's not surprising that he inherited such nice-looking genes. GI Joe was really exciting and I, too, will see the sequel when it's released.

Chan's fame has sort of sneaked up on the movie-going audience. We enjoy his movies but don't always realize he's the actor we already know. At least, that's what happened to me after his first few movies.

Yes, teaches, 28 movies already and counting. Thanks, m'dear, for enjoying this story.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Delighted, izettle, to learn that your husband is pretty darn cool. Chan is a little disappointed though that he's not your first love.

As for the email notifications of new hubs, it seems that Hubpages no longer sends them to us. Instead, if you go to your Hub Statistics page, at the top is a heading, 'Following'. If you click on that there is a choice on the left side of the page. Click on 'Hubbers you Follow'.' That way you can check to see if a new hub has been written by a hubber you like to follow.

Happy you found Chan in a comment on another hub, and that you, too, are already a Channing Tatum fan. We have a lot in common, m'dear, I adore Gerard Butler, too.

I believe 'Magic Mike' will be released within the next two weeks so you know I'll be sitting front and center when it opens. See ya at the movies, my friend.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

No, sweetie, you did not fool me. You may be a more mature person but you are NOT dead. So I knew you would love Chan as I do. Right?

But you would also read the funny joke and perhaps pass it on to one of your family, friends or neighbors. Right?

I can't believe i haven't seen any of his movies. He is a hunk. His dancing moves are out-of-sight. He has everything going for him, a beautiful wife and talent. I think what i like the most about him, he wasn't born into wealth, he just had what it takes to become great. I am going to look for, ' The son of no one' with Al Pacino. I must admit that Al is a hunk of my generation..But I still like to look..Hee.. GREAT interview..Loved it

So, Linda, you're a fellow Chan fan and Ricky Martin follower, too! Who knew? Yes Ricky is banging but Chan right now is even 'bangier'. Trust me. You will enjoy 'Jump Street' - Chan looks cute and he and Jonah are funny.

You're most welcome, 'm'dear, for the treat, and thanks for appreciating the hub, the photos and the videos. Chan sends his love! Don't forget to let me know how much you love Magic Mike in his new 'hubba, hubba' film.

drbj profile image

Now you will just have to make up for lost time, Ruby, and catch Chan (what a delicious thought!) in all his flms. You will love both 'Step Up' films with lots of dancing; the 'GI Joe' and 'Haywire' films for lots of action; and the '21 Jump Street' for action and comedy.

I agree - Chan seems to have it all - talent, dancing ability, good looks, a loving family, and the wife of his dreams.

I think you will enjoy his film with Al Pacino who still has that macho look. No charge - yet - for looking. Thanks for loving this interview and your GREAT comments, m'luv.

Yes, Dex, you are absolutely right in your supposition. But if you like action movies, you might want to catch the film, 'Haywire." Chan is in it but he stars with Gina Carano, a female Bruce Lee. And the GI Joe movie is full of action, too. Thanks for being supportive nevertheless. You ARE a friend!

Very nicely done....I enjoyed reading your interview with Chan....he has come a long way over the last 8 years.....and 2012 has been very good to him.....with three big box office hits so far. I still can not believe how well Magic Mike did at the box office....I think I am getting old as I do not understand why things are popular and not popular at the box office....voted up and interesting.

Thanks for the kind comments, Cogerson, I appreciate your visit. If you are having difficulty understanding why some films are popular and some are not, welcome to the crowd. In Chan's case, I think "Magic Mike" was entertaining, especially for women since the majority of films about 'strippers' feature women in that role.

Thank you also for the Up.
