Eminem: Lose Yourself in my Fan Letter

A Rapper Poet and he knows it....

Hey Em, Eminem, Slim Shady, Marshall Bruce Mathers ... I'll just call you Em in my letter. First off I'd like to request a SMILE! I understand due to your image and persona a smile wouldn't be hip. I still think it would be nice to see you garnish a goofy grin once in a while! Consider doing that for your fans. You have had quite a history, my man. You've come a long way and I have to tell you, I am impressed!

You started out on the bottom rung of the ladder and took one rung at a time. You never jumped or leapt. You struggled to get where you are and I commend you! You were a genius to self-produce your first album and it somehow found it's way to Dr. Dre.

There was no free ride for Em. You've earned all that you've achieved. Maybe having a rough upbringing such as portrayed in your successful film 8 Mile was a benefit to you. Even so I wouldn't recommend that any child's life be tough. Sadly though, it happens everyday.

Along your journey you have gained millions of fans and also picked up many critics. Most of your critics are women. I'm sure you aren't surprised at this information. Dude, you trashed women in your songs for years! As a female I never held it against you. Why, you ask? Because I realize it's part of your act.

As an artist you have the opportunity to express yourself however you please. You've sung about murder...now if you were serious about that I'm sure you wouldn't have announced it to the world in a song. Right? Sure, you will pick up some enemies along the way but that means your voice was heard. Don't sweat it...oh wait, you aren't! Haha!

I appreciate your humor, the way you can laugh at yourself in your own songs. You once quoted "anybody with a sense of humor is going to put on my album and laugh from beginning to end," I agree with your perception. I gotta tell you I take your music too serious to laugh but I have chuckled here and there!

Your song "Lose Yourself" is my favorite, which also happens to be the longest running #1 hip hop single. The lyrics and music give me the push I need when life has tossed me a few lemons. Lose Yourself also helped me lose 40 pounds, so actually I did lose myself! I would hit the pavement with your tunes on my iPod and you gave me the motivation I needed to keep on running or walking. I eventually found my way back home.

I enjoyed losing myself to your tunes and losing that darn weight! Heck, I lost it and I am not sending out a search party for it and never want to see it again! So I thank you Em for being my workout buddy and for that extra push when I need it the most.

"Not Afraid" is another favorite song of mine. We have your hand and you have ours. This song is further proof that we need to face our fears! We need to try our best to beat addictions. We all know that addictions are hard to break. I bet rehab was a bitch, but you beat it and you deserve a standing ovation! I hope you don't ever go back to the darkness!

Your talent is not only a gift to you, it's a gift to many. Your music obviously appeals to "kids" of all ages...curious minds want to know what creation Em will entertain us with next! I'm excited to see your next movie Southpaw, due out later this year!!! I appreciate what you have to say. Thank you for being you. Continue to speak your mind and voice your opinion. Your fans wouldn't want it any other way.

Lose Yourself by Eminem inspires me....

Original Eminem quotes....

"My family has never been there for me. They expect things because we're blood." - On his family

"A lot of my rhymes are just to get chuckles out of people. Anybody with half a brain is going to be able to tell when I'm joking and when I'm serious." - About his lyrics

"You can't control who likes you. If I got Backstreet Boy fans what am I supposed to do? Turn them away? Whoever likes my stuff, likes my stuff but just know Slim Shady is hip hop, I grew up on hip hop, it's the music I love and it's the music I respect. I respect the culture...that's me." – About his fans/hip-hop

"I'm not alone in feeling the way I feel. I believe that a lot of people can relate to my shit--whether white, black, it doesn't matter. Everybody has been through some shit, whether it's drastic or not so drastic. Everybody gets to the point of 'I don't give a f**k'." – About his attitude

"I get offended when people say, `So, being a white rapper...and growing up white...after being born white...' It's all I ever hear!" - On the question of race.

Most hip hop is crap. Eminem, dre, tupac and snoop are the real deal. I read somewhere that Lose Yourself is the #1 download for runners. I know it's pushed me down many roads when I wanted to quit.

People lump all hip hop together. They shouldn't. And this is coming from a guy who's favorite band is the Eagles. Great hub.

Sunshine - I love Eminem! He is an artist with personality, drive and guts. I really admire a person who brings themselves up - when they don't have a lot going for them. He has raw talent - and didn't waste a bit of it.

Awesome hub!!

Sunshine, I am usually not a fan of rap but there are a few I like and Eminem is def one. I have always loved his songs.. he just gets into it with so much passion and they always have a good beat. I found out some new things about him. I never knew he went to rehab. It's awesome he's been able to remain clean and sober. I knew about his troubles growing up, thank goodness he beat the odds. Awesome hub, Sunshine!

When I was lucky enough to see him in concert this past August, I was just speechless. He is a great rapper. I have one of his cd's that never leaves my CD player in my car!! My friend & I have decided that when/if he tours next year, we don't care where it is, we are going. He is that worth it!! Great hub!!

I am not a person who really ever liked rap. The irony is, I absolutely love Eminem. Ok - so I guess he is more hip hop rap type music. I am not really sure how they want to really classify it. I always considered it rap. I am glad that I got a chance to read this wonderful tribute to him. I think he has got some serious stuff that he wants to share with the world. I am glad he can make a joke out of some things that we often take to serious, even if he always does it without a smile. And now that I think about it.. I honestly don't know if I have ever seen him smile either.

Great hub - very informative!

Hi Sunshine, yes I have to agree with your hub. Eminem has come out with some great music. I don't like a lot of tuneless talking rap, but Eminem's music is powerful and melodic. He deserves all his success and I love his lyrics. Cheers

Often people who lived a hard life initially come out with great skills. Eminem was one of them... I can't forget 8 mile. Other than him I love Nickleback, do you know that he used to work in a restaurant and he used to return penny's left to his customers by saying "here's your nickleback" that's how they got their bank name. Wow some stories not to be forgotten. Thank you Sunshine to discuss on music czars.

Hi attemptedhumour! Eminem is a one man band! I'm very thankful for him and his gift. Thank you for your thoughts :)

Hi Techbook! 8 Mile is one of my favorite movies. It's more difficult to watch now that Brittany Murphy has passed away :( I adore Chad Kroeger, his voice is amazing! I didn't know that's how the band got it's name...thank you for that bit of music trivia!!

Eminem never really offended me about his rants against women mostly because I knew he wasn't talking about all women, just his ex-wife and mother. When he came out, I liked other kinds of music more and still do but I appreciate his honesty and sincerity to his fans. Stan is probably my favorite by him. Great Hub.

I've always thought of Eminem as a modern day poet. I love how he strings words together and makes new words up when another won't do. As for the profanity in his music it's always been artistic expression to me. They're simply letters of the alphabet. They only have the power we give to them. The word "this" can be said all day, but rearrange the letters and some people become offended. I've always wondered about this....it's the same 4 letters. Great Hub!

GREAT hub! I have been a fan of Eminem from the start. I really enjoyed learning more about him... you are totally right. I wouldliek to see him smile more. He is a cutie... and you are right about something else. His rapping about murder and all of the "horrible" things that offend so many. It's humor. It's art. It's venting. And it is done in a creatie and talented way. Just like this hub and it's author. Creative and Talented... You should send him this letter! One of the best I have read so far!

Thank the brotha who bruhgot this up. Look any brotha that sold number 1 had nothing postive on their minds. Neither does slim. To put this dude on a throne is another way of putting that image of erou-crastic rule over afrikan created hip-hop or rap (also now called crap) . Any who. Busta can murk m in seconds. Many can. But is m is nice . . . and m is money. And as an artist he draws both crowds. Hate or love it that song WHITE AMERICA helped him alot. . . Hotep neteru. . .
