Since his debut in the 1887 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes has become a prolific character in all forms of media, including stage shows, comics, television, video games and of course movies. In movies alone, the Guinness Book of Records credits 211 films using 75 actors to the character, a record for representation in film. Surely the most prolific representations of Sherlock Holmes was by Eille Norwood who played the character in 47 silent films between 1920 and 1923. Holmes creator said of Norwood, "His wonderful impersonation of Holmes has amazed me." Another worthy contribution was from Basil Rathbone, who portrayed the character in thirteen Sherlock Holmes movies between 1939 and 1946. Georges Tréville and Peter O'Toole were other actors to don the deer hat and pipe numerous times.

Modern audiences will be most familiar with Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Holmes opposite Jude Law as Watson. Downey has appeared as Holmes in 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, both directed by Guy Richie. Another collaboration is believed to be in the works.

The first appearance of Holmes in film can be traced back to the year 1900. ‘Sherlock Holmes Baffled’ was a thirty second silent, black and white film featuring the eponymous character repeatedly thwarted by a thief who keeps disappearing. The film is so old that the details of who played the thief and Holmes have been lost. The Holmes in the film has very few similarities with other incarnations of the character, and it is likely the title was only used to take advantage of the name recognition.
