Barbie Movie List

Barbie, the popular doll made by Mattel, is also a movie star. Her first movie was Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World, which was released in 1987. It was followed by two other movies in the late '80s and early '90s, but then everyone's favorite doll took a 14-year hiatus from film. In 2001, however, Barbie started appearing in made-for-DVD movies. The newest Barbie movie, "Barbie & Her Sisters in A Pony Tale" was released in October, just two months after the newest addition to the Fairytopia series hit the shelves. This latest film marks the 29th movie starring the popular doll. Another installment will be coming soon! How many have you seen? Here's a complete Barbie movie list.

These were the first movies starring Barbie. They are not currently available on DVD, but you may be able to find old VHS copies of these movies on Amazon or eBay.

1. Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World (1987) The movie that started it all was a 1987 TV special based on Mattel's line of dolls known as Barbie and the Rockers. The special was originally shown as a two-part TV series and was later released on VHS video.
2. Barbie and The Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth (1987)

   This was the second installment of the "Barbie and the Rockers" special, although the name of Barbie's band was changed to The Sensations. In this animated show, Barbie and the band travel back in time to the 1950s.

3. Dance Workout with Barbie (1992)

   This 30-minute video shows an animated Barbie teaching a dance/aerobics class to a group of real live girls. What's interesting about this video is that one of the girls, who was 12 at the time, was none other than Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hewitt also recorded all the songs on the video. Before her acting career, she was a budding singer.

In 2001, Mattel started creating a new series of movies starring Barbie in fairy tale-type stories, in which our heroine often plays a princess. You can purchase these movies on DVD or Blu-Ray and also download these movies for your laptop or tablet. (See the link below the movie list to easily find any of the DVDs shown here.) Most of the films also have related dolls and toys.

1. Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)

   This was Barbie's first full-length animated movie, and it was based on the classic Nutracker ballet. Barbie plays the role of Clara, who receives a beautiful nutcracker as a gift. While she's sleeping, the Nutcracker comes to life to fight the evil Mouse King. Clara awakes and tries to help the Nutcracker, but the Mouse King casts a spell on her, and Clara and the Nutcracker must then go on an adventure to find the Sugarplum Princess who can save her from the spell.

2. Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)

   Barbie stars as Rapunzel in this animated film based on the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Rapunzel is a talented young artist who has been locked up by the evil witch Gothel (voiced by Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston). But when Rapunzel discovers a magic paintbrush, she discovers a way out of her prison, ends the fighting between two feuding kingdoms, and falls in love with the handsome Prince Stefan.

3. Barbie of Swan Lake (2003)

   In this movie based on Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet, Barbie plays Odette, the young daughter of a baker. When Odette follows a unicorn into an enchanted forest, she is turned into a swan by an evil wizard named Rothbart (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) who wants to take over the forest and defeat the Fairy Queen. Odette discovers its her destiny to save the forest from the wizard. The movie includes music performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

4. Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (2004)

   The Princess and the Pauper was Barbie's first musical and featured seven original songs written just for the movie. In the film, based on Mark Twain's story, stars Barbie as Princess Annaliese and a poor village girl named Erika. The two lead very different lives but look identical. So when Annaliese is kidnapped, Erika must pretend to be the princess to save the princess and the kingdom from the evil Preminger.

5. Barbie: Fairytopia (2005)

   Barbie plays Elina, a flower fairy who is teased because she doesn't have wings like the other fairies in the Magic Meadow. But when an evil fairy named Laverna poisons everything and Elina's fairy friends can't fly, she and her pet puffball Bibble set out on a journey to find the Guardian Fairy who can make everything right again.

6. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (2005)

   Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus was Barbie's first original princess fiary tale movie. In it, Barbie stars as Princess Annika, a young princess who is trying to save her family after an evil wizard named Wenlock turned them to stone. Annika is helped by Brietta, a winged horse who helps her on a journey to build a magical Wand of Light that will defeat Wenlock and save the kingdom.

7. The Barbie Diaries (2006)

   This Barbie movie tries to appeal to older girls by moving away from the fairy tale genre and dipping into the area of first romance. In this one, Barbie stars as a sophomore in high school who has a magic bracelet and diary. After writing her dreams in the diary, they start to come true. But when she loses the bracelet, she discovers she doesn't need the bracelet or diary to make her life wonderful. The movie features eight new songs by Skye Sweetnam.

8. Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)

   In this extremely popular sequel to Fairytopia, Barbie again plays the fairy Elina. Elina has to go to Mermaidia and trade her wings for a mermaid tale to save Prince Nalu, He was kidnapped by the evil Laverna so she can force him to give her the location of a special magical berry. Elina teams up with Nori, a mermaid who doesn't like Elina, but together they learn to work together to save the prince.

9. Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)

   This animated Barbie movie is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" and stars Barbie as Princess Genevieve. She and her 11 sisters love to dance, and together they discover a secret gateway to a magical land where wishes comes true. The sisters have to work together when their father, the king, becomes ill, and they have to find the secret to save him and the kingdom.

10. Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow (2007)

    In this third movie in Barbie's Fairytopia series, Elina again battles the evil Laverna. Elina and her pet Bibble go to Fairy School so Elina can learn the magical Flight of Spring and create the first rainbow of the season. But Laverna wants to put an end to spring and plunge Fairytopia into 10 years of winter. Elina and her new friends from school must battle to save spring and defeat Laverna.

11. Barbie as the Island Princess (2007)

    In this movie, Barbie stars as Ro, a little girl who gets lost at sea and grows up on a deserted tropical island. Ro's family becomes the animals on the island, so when a prince discover their home and invites Ro to return to civilization, she brings her animal friends with her. Later Ro must use her ability to talk to the animals to uncover a plot to take over the kingdom

12. Barbie Mariposa (2008)

    The full name of this movie is Barbie: Mariposa and her Butterfly Fairy Friends, and it's the final movie in the Fairytopia series. It's also the first of the Barbie movies not to feature the voice of Kelly Sheridan as the main protagonist. Sheridan is the voice of Elina in this movie, but the main character, Marioposa, is voiced by Chiara Zanni. In this film, Barbie is Mariposa, a butterfly fairy who must save the Queen of Flutterfield after she is poisoned by an evil fairy.

13. Barbie and the Diamond Castle (2008)

    Barbie and Teresa star in this animated film as two best friends named Liana and Alexa. When the friends discover a magic mirror that has a girl trapped inside, they go in search of the Diamond Castle to free Melody from the mirror and put an end to an evil muse's plot to deprive the whole world of music.

14. Barbie in a Christmas Carol (2008)

    In a movie based on the Charles' Dickens classic, Barbie in a Christmas Carol stars Barbie in her first Christmas film. She plays Eden Starling, a spoiled opera singer who hates Christmas. But when Eden is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, Christmas present, and Christmas future, she realizes how selfish and mean she has been and decides to be a more caring person.

15. Barbie Thumbelina (2009)

    In this modern retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen story Thumbelina, Barbie tells the story of a young girl named Makena whose parents are about to build on a plot of land inhabited by the Twillerbees, the tiny little people who live amongst the plants. Thumbelina must convince Makena to help stop the construction to save the Twillwerbees.

16. Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009)

    Barbie stars as Corinne, a girl who dreams of becoming a musketeer. In pursuit of her dream Corinne travels to Paris, where she meets three other girls who share the same dream. Together, their skills are tested when they discover a plot against Prince Louis and must fight to save him.

17. Barbie in A Mermaid Tale (2010)

    In this tale, Barbie stars as Merliah Summers, a champsion surfer, who finds out she is half-mermaid. With the help of a pink dolphin named Zuma, Meliah travels to the underwater world of Oceana, where her mother, Queen Calissa, has been imprisoned by the evil Erisa. Merliah must save her mother so the queen can reclaim her kingdom.

18. Barbie: A Fashion Fairy Tale (2010)

    When Barbie and her dog Sequin go to Paris to visit her Aunt Millicent's boutique, she discovers it's about to close forever. But when she discovers "Flairies" with magic powers to help designers,Barbie comes up with an idea to save the shop, and she and her aunt must race to design a whole new line of clothing to save the business.

19. Barbie: A Fairy Secret (2011)

    Barbie must save Ken in this movie that stars Barbie as herself. When Ken is kidnapped, Barbie and her rival Raquelle must journey to a secret world inhabited by fairies, where they don wings and learn to fly so they can save Ken from a fairy princess under the influence of a love potion.

20. Barbie: Princess Charm School (2011)

    In this animated movie, Barbie stars as Blair, a poor girl who has won the opportunity to study at the prestigious Princess Charm School and has problem keeping up with her "rich" classmates. But when Dame Devin notices Blair looks remarkably like the kingdom's missing princess, she works to make sure Blair never finds out the truth. Now Blair and her new friends must find an enchanted crown.

21. Barbie: A Perfect Christmas (2011)

    This is Barbie's second Christmas movie, following the earlier release of "Barbie in a Christmas Carol." When Barbie and her sisters Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea think their holiday vacation is ruined after a snowstorm diverts their plane, they learn what Christmas is really about and end up having the best Christmas ever.

22. Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 (2012)

    Barbie returns to her role as champion surfer and half-mermaid princess Merliah Summers in this sequel to Barbie in a Mermaid Tale. This time, Oceania is in trouble again and Merliah must once again defeat Eris to save her mother and the ocean kingdom.

23. Barbie: The Princess and The Popstar (2012)

    This is the second Barbie movie based on Mark Twain's story, "The Prince and the Pauper." In this version, Barbie plays Princess Tori of Meribella and singing sensation Keira, two identical girls who trade places so they can each live the life they've always dreamed of. But they soon learn that sometimes dreams aren't exactly the way you imagined them.

24. Barbie in the Pink Shoes (2013)

    Barbie stars as Kristyn, a ballerina who tries on a pair of sparkly pink shoes and suddenly finds herself whisked away to a fantastical ballet world with her friend Hailey. Once there, Kristyn must dance in well-known ballets such as Swan Lake to to defeat an evil Snow Queen.

25. Barbie Mariposa & the Fairy Princess (2013)
    

    This film is the latest installment of the Fairytopia series. In it, Mariposa travels to Shimmervale, where she befriends Princess Catania. She is banished after a misunderstanding, but returns to help her friend save the kingdom.

26. Barbie and Her Sisters in a Pony Tale (2013)
    Barbie and her sisters Chelsea, Skipper and Stacie go to a riding academy in the Swiss Alps to spend their summer vacation and find a horse to bring home. But when they find a wild horse in the woods, the sisters find themselves getting more than they bargained for in a magical adventure.
