Family History Genealogy, Ancestry and Family Tree Web Links

Family Tree Searches

I have been researching my family tree for many years now and I've come a long way, not without a lot of help from some wonderful people who performed free searches along the way and a lot of digging to find the right websites that are out there and hold all those elusive little clues to your family lineage that drive you crazy.

To that end I have decided to start a hub to provide links to all those websites that I have found useful, if you're just starting your research I hope that these links will help you and as a suggestion I would say that do as much research as you can without handing over any money unless you really, really have to. Ask for help on every forum that you can possibly find, we're a real friendly bunch us family historians and if we have the time and the ability we love to help each other, well that's my experience anyway.

My final piece of advise comes under the idea of, if I can tell you one thing that you really, really need to know what would it be? Well that would be:

Whenever you get a piece of information (no matter how small or seemingly insignificant) file it, keep it and more importantly source it, source it, source it!

What I mean is the piece of information that you get from Great Aunt Betty's second cousin twice removed's best mate or the name on that scribbled postcard you found in the back of an old book, may, just may be really important 5 years into your research, and if you don't know where or how you got it then you won't know if it's a fact. You will also here many family 'Chinese whispers', call them legends or stories if you will which you will add to your data files, at the time you know that they're not facts, but now they're in a data file someone else will accept it as a fact, or if you're sharing information and someone asks you where you got that information you'll be able to tell them so they will know how valid and factual it is, (or not).

So Source It! And you'll be very glad you did.

COMING SOON .............

I am currently in the process of producing a 'CD' that can be purchased which will contain all the information that I have collected over the years, currently just over 6,000 individual's names and data, including over 2,000 photographs which can be purchased for the grand price of $5, how's that for a low introductory price? This will cover the cost of setting things up and I'd just like to get the information out there to the people who are searching for it. Yearly updates will be available so that you can keep up-to-date with everything being collected as I go along. If you are interested in purchasing this either in CD form or as a GEDCOM which you can download direct onto your pc please leave me a message in the comments box and I will notify you when this is ready to purchase.

Good point about recording your sources Eileen - it's a habit I have got out of since using Ancestry because they just do it for you!

Great hub! Thanks for sharing such useful links! Have you tried the Mocavo search engine? Putting names into quotations helps the search engine define closer results to what the user is seeking. Since genealogy is time consuming research, it's great that there is a search engine out there dedicated to genealogy searches.

Yes Mocavo is great, you can even relocate things that you posted years ago and had trouble refinding as well as lots of new things connected to your family trees.
