You Never Expect...
You never expect to love something
With so much of your core
To feel like you never knew the meaning
Of having something to live for.
You never expect,
To fall so deeply, so quickly,
For a pair of tiny eyes
The depth in them catches you by surprise
You never expect
The pain that came in delivering this love
To fade into a surreal memory
Like you remember the tears and fears and the hours that passed,
And think,
I can’t believe that was me.
You never expect
That you could survive an ordeal like the one
That brought you your perfect little son,
Or daughter, whichever one.
You never expect
The sleepless nights, and the bottle fights,
Doing so much wrong
and so much right.
Feeling like finding patience,
Is the biggest fight of your life.
You never expect
To feel your heart catch in your throat,
As you watch them sleep,
Knowing that if they were taken, you’d create a new meaning to “weep”.
To feel your heart skip a beat,
And swallow deep, and push it all aside,
To take the reins to this lifetime ride.
Because you never expected to be a mother,
To be responsible for another,
And you never expected to love it so much,
That holding them in your arms, makes you feel whole,
And when they are gone,
There exist, a huge hole.
