Chicken Wings Coming to McDonald's Sept. 9th

Updated on September 1, 2013

McDonald's is Set to Introduce the Mighty Wing

With football season approaching in high fashion and the high demand for fast foods like pizza and wings, McDonald's has decided to get in on the action with their newly introduced menu item called the 'Mighty Wing'.

The date is set for Sept. 9th, as regular season football will be underway. This is perhaps no coincidence, but instead a carefully thought-out strategic plan on the part on Mickey-D's. The newly introduced bone-in breaded menu item that is the Mighty Wing has already had its trial run in places like Atlanta and Chicago with much success. So, it is now time to take things nationwide.

The Mighty Wings will come in three sizes: 3-piece, 5-piece and 10-pieces, with starting prices at $2.99. These prices can seem a bit high compared to those restaurants that specifically cater to nothing but chicken. Perhaps the secret to the success of McDonald's Mighty Wings may come in the wide variety of dipping sauces. There will be a total of 9 different add-on flavors which include;

  • Sweet & Sour Sauce
  • Honey Mustard Sauce
  • Honey Barbecue Sauce
  • Tangy Barbecue Sauce

  • and of course the classic Creamy Ranch Sauce

Even though places like Buffalo Wild Wings offer its own wide assortment of wing sauces/marinades, there may still be a posed threat as McDonald's overshadows the BWW business just in shear presence. The convenience of traveling 'downtown' compared to down-the-street for some wings puts McDonald's in a very realistic realm of competition. This competition may also very well lead to an anticipated hike in wing prices across the board, from wholesalers to the restaurants themselves. It's suggested that McDonald's long thought out plan to introduce the Mighty Wing may be the reason for a near shortage of wings, as McDonald's was believed to have been stockpiling on the American delicacy for at least 18 months now. According to a report from BloomburgBusinessweek, the price of wings since 2011 has jumped immensely from $.90/lb to well over $2. As it now stands, the wholesale price of the wing is right in at just under a buck-fifty. These numbers, when crunched, tell a tale of jacked up prices for an order of the hangover relieving treat.

Perhaps the hype of the Mighty Wing is not too much to worry about however, as the nationwide debut will only last until November. But then again, just like other menu items such as the McRib, this short lived introduction may be yet another ingenious marketing scheme on the part of the 'Burger-Joint'.
