The Cost? ONLY 11,00 euro (lunch) and 13,50 eruo (dinner)- including house wine. Unbelievable price for good food. Family owned and operated, il Contadino has been serving casalinga (home-style) Tuscan cooking since 1974 and has a loyal client base.
Open Monday through Friday, it's one of the few places in town where you can get a late lunch since it is served from 12:00 - 17:00 and dinner is served from 17:00 - 21:40. There are usually about ten first courses and twelve second courses to choose from and about seven side dishes. It's best to come for lunch if you want to have more of a selection since they may run out of a couple of items by dinnertime.
My husband and I decided to go for lunch and we hit the jackpot because they were serving all of our favorite things! We started with pappardelle pasta with a savory wild boar ragu made with tomatoes and juniper berries and spaghetti with cherry tomatoes. Both were delicious and served in abundance. For our second courses, we ordered the wild boar stew (again made with traditional juniper) and meatballs. Both were juicy, tender, flavorful. The sides of oven roasted potatoes (crispy outside, creamy inside) and cooked spinach added the perfect touch. To finish off our meal, we shared a silky lemon mousse torte for dessert that was absolutely scrumptious. Everything was washed down with water and house wine (red).
Although we were literally bursting at the seams from being so full, the bill came to only 25,00 euro! That's almost unheard of in the Florence city center. The quality of food that you get for the price is really impressive, which is why I felt the need to write about this place and share it with everyone.
When you go, you will swear that there are a team of Italian mammas in the kitchen, but this is not the case. Instead, there are three Italian male chefs busily preparing all the delicious food. Not only are they talented cooks, but they are also quite "simpatici" (friendly) and allowed me to take their photo for this article. So, if you go there, mention to them that you saw their faces on my blog! They will love it.
NOTE: In my humble opinion, they make the best braised rabbit in the city.
