Food Gift Ideas: Rum Raisin Cake & Other Goodies from Pepper Patch

Updated on August 21, 2010

Regardless of the occasion, gourmet food items make awesome gift ideas. As long as you take into account the preferences of the gift receiver when selecting food items, you can't go wrong. Everybody has to eat, and most of us really enjoy it, too! I give food gifts for weddings, anniversaries, holidays, housewarming, and other occasions.

I recently received a great food gift from a business associate. It was so good, that I am sure I will give the goodie to my friends, relatives, and clients in the future. This gift was my first experience with a Rum Raisin Cake. If you have never tried this type of cake, you really don't know what you are missing. It is absolutely delicious; a soft, moist cake with a distinctive rum flavor.

The cake I received was made by Pepper Patch, a small company based in Franklin, TN. The rum in these cakes is Flor de Cana Rum, which is aged for 12 years, and gives the cake a rich, distinctive taste. The company specializes in making handmade, all-natural gourmet food products that are available in gourmet stores around the country or can be ordered online from the company website. It is attractively packed in a nice tin, which makes it perfect for holiday gift giving.

Other Cakes by Pepper Patch

  • Old Fashioned Jam Cake
  • Tipsy Cake (gets its name from a not-so-scecret ingredient: Jack Daniels Whiskey)
  • Tipsy Fudge Cake
  • Williamsburg Orange Wine Cake (I'm going to try this one next ... it sounds awesome!)

Feeling Adventurous? Rum Cake Recipes

While I love to cook, I am definitely not a baker. I'm not nearly brave enough to try to bake my own rum cake. I'll just stick with the Pepper Patch version. However, for those of you who are adventurous enough to give it a whirl, here are a few rum cake recipe resources:

The Best Part About Giving Food Gifts

It would, of course, be irresponsible to give a gourmet food gift without trying it first yourself. After all, you wouldn't want to risk upsetting the gift recipient with something that he or she wouldn't like! So, whether you decide to order rum cakes for your friends and relatives, or you decide to send the homemade variety, you definitely need to plan for a personal taste-testing (maybe two or three, just to be sure) before you ship goodies off to the people you care about the most.
