How to Make Romanian Cakes


The Romanians were known to celebrate special occasions, and even in their daily lives, with sweet delicacies. Yes, that is right; Romanians prepare delicious and sweet soft cakes. Romanian cakes vary in appearance and raw materials used. Romanian cakes also differ in their sweetness and purpose. Some Romanian cakes were even made especially for a Diabetic diet. Some were just plain sweet to the taste buds and mouth watering to the extreme.

Walnut Sponge Cake

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs separated into egg whites and egg yolks
  • 14 tsp of cinnamon
  • 3 tsp of granulated sugar
  • 1 ¼ cup of flour
  • ½ cup of cold water
  • ½ cup of walnuts, chopped fine
  • ¾ tsp of cream tartar
  • ½ tsp of vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions:

Step 1: Get a bowl and an egg beater. Pour the egg yolks into the bowl and then beat egg yolks until thick and are lemon coloured.

Step 2: Add the water, and then add the vanilla extract and the granulated sugar. Beat the mixture until fluffy.

Step 3: Pour the flour into the mixture and stir well. Then, stir in the cinnamon, salt, and the walnuts.

Step 4: Beat the egg whites until they are foamy and then add the cream of tartar to it. Beat until still peaks are formed.

Step 5: Fold the egg yolk mixture into the beaten egg whites gently and carefully.

Step 6: Pour the mixture into a 9 inch ungreased tube pan. Bake it in an oven at 325 degrees Celsius for about 65 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly touched or poked.

Step 7: Remove the cake in the oven and let it cool for 1 hour before removing the cake from the tube pan. Serve.

Romanian Apple Cake

Ingredients:

  • 5 apples, peeled and cored
  • 3 whole eggs
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups of white sugar
  • ¾ cup of vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup of chopped walnuts
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven. Set the oven temperature for 175 degrees Celsius.

Step 2: Prepare the pan. Get 9x13 inch pan then grease and flour it.

Step 3: Cut the apples. Use a knife to cut the apples into 1 inch wedges then set it aside.

Step 4: Beat the eggs and sugar together in a large bowl until they are blended. Then, mix the baking soda, cinnamon, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the egg mixture. Stir in the flour until it incorporates into the mixture.

Step 5: Fold the apple wedges and the walnuts.

Step 6: Pour the result into the greased pan. Bake in the oven for about 55 minutes or when a toothpick that is inserted into the cake comes out clean.

Step 7: Let it cool a little. Serve it warm.
