Top 10 Most Disgusting Foods
1. MONKEY BRAINS
Primarily consumed in China Monkey Brains are considered a delicacy. Historically monkey brains have been eaten raw and even directly from a live monkey however in this day and age they are primarily cooked and eaten as part of a prepared meal. The practice of eating monkey brains as cuisine has lessened over time possibly due to several species being endangered possibly due to modern times presenting more edible options to the populace.
2. GAU JAL (cow urine softdrink)
In development however this is a real product and will be something that is mass marketed in India very shortly. Although this new soft drink will contain other ingredients it's majority ingredient will be cow urine. It will be marketed under the name Gau Jal which means "cow water," in english. Despite what many may think there is strong commercial financial backing for this product and many in India can't wait to try it out!
3. CASU MARZU CHEESE (with live maggots)
Casu Marzu which actually means "rotten cheese" in Italian is sheep milk cheese that cotains live insect larvae or as we simple folk call them maggots. The larvae are added to the cheese initially and over time the cheese is brought to a point beyond normal fermentation where the cheese begins to break down or rot. The cheese can then be consumed still containing the live larvae.
For a time the cheese was actually declared illegal due to possible health risks however it has been declared a traditional food by the European Union as it has been made for hundreds (possibly thousands) of years. There still is controversy over consumption of the cheese as insect larvae are able to pass through the entire human digestive system alive and thus cause health problems.
4. CENTURY EGG
The Century Egg primarily consumed in China and other asian countries are quail, duck and other eggs that have been preserved for a period for later human consumption. Basically they are not refrigerated for several weeks to several months until the yolk becomes dark green while the white of the egg becomes brown.
Apparently at this point it brings out a flavor that people can enjoy. So while many may consider this to be a very rotten egg to others it may be a very tasty snack.
5. BULL PENIS
Bull penis although primarily used to make dog treats is also consumed by humans. It is often called "Pizzle" and in other parts of the world "cow cods" (which makes little sense as cows do not have a penis). Occasionally bull penis can be consumed raw but is primarily used in soups, smoked, or ground into a paste that is sometimes added to alcoholic drinks.
6. LUTEFISK
Lutefisk is made from aged fish and lye. Prepared as a gelatinous dish it has a very strong odor and is primarily a food prepared in scandinavia(Sweden, Norway and Finland). Lutefisk must be prepared very carefully or the fish can literally turn into soap due to the high content of lye. Despite it's difficulty in prepartaion and powerful odor it is prepared and eaten by many.
7. KUMIS
Kumis is fermented mare (female horse) milk which once fermented has little lactose and thus can be an alternative for those who are lactose intolerant. Horse milk must be fermented in this way properly and consumed in moderation as it can be a very strong laxative. It is also mildly alcoholic when completely fermented.
8. SEA URCHIN GONADS
I've been told that this is best served live. Taking the live sea urchin you much break it open and remove it's gonads which are the edible part of the creature. Seemingly in most regions of the world where it is consumed it is raw not cooked. Some consume the gonads directly others use them in soups and as substitutes for butter and other sauces.
9. CHRYSALIS (caterpillar larvae)
Primarily an asian dish Chrysalis is the stage that caterpillars go through when changing into a butterfly. These are often cooked while live and turn golden brown and then consumed. However as a marketed product that has a shelf life it is sold in cans after it is dead.
10. ROOSTER TESTICLES
Rooster testicles can be eaten raw or cooked. I think the disgusting factor is pretty evident but many people like rooster testicles and they are considered a delicacy in certain parts of the world.
