         It was his land since his family homesteaded it in 1887. The land was taken from him for the purpose of protecting a desert tortoise.  Who is stealing from who?

      This story is crazy in many ways.  One thing is true, no matter what he has done, things could be handled much better than they are.  There is no need for weapons and the show of force.  I think it was judge Napolitano who said this could all be dealt with when pens and paper, or something like that.  It could be done in a much more civil and logical manner.
      
      As it is, the death of animals, the guns being pointed at people and all the interesting side stories this has really brought up make one think this isn't just about a cattle rancher that has done so wrong he must be punished to this degree.  Sometimes those being demeaned and made to look bad aren't the ones with the biggest problems.  Not by a long shot.

         Some people do not respond to words - others respond only negatively.
         
         This thief has been court ordered several times to vacate the area if he would not pay the requisite fees; the response was to double the number of cattle he was illegally grazing.  Pens and paper were a total failure.
         
         Given that, what would your suggestion be except violence?  Keeping in mind that the only thing the government has done was to remove the illegal cattle and protect the workers as it was done, what other viable option is available?

            I'm a little surprised at your response. As you are generally in favor of self-sufficiency over government mandates of the like. This issue has been presented by many as the government over-stepping its bounds by taking land owned by a private party. Is this not a conflict between one man's right to live free and the government's abuse of power? Now, I wouldn't argue that way myself, but many people have presented this story as that.

               LOL  While it is true the Bundy has decided that because his ancestors ran cattle on public land he can do whatever he wants with it, Bundy does not, nor has he or any of his ancestors ever owned the land in question.  The US government owns the land and has for the last couple or so hundred years.
               
               So no, it is NOT about taking land owned by a private party; it is about a private party deciding they can ignore their lease and do as they wish with land YOU and I own.  Nor is it about government's abuse of power: the government is tasked with maintaining the land you and I own and this is a part of that.  Exercising power, yes, but not abuse nor excessive use of power.  Just maintaining what is ours, instead of letting a thief steal the use of it.

      Though he is in the wrong regarding his grazing rights, this is anything but a simple issue.  One of the most troubling things is the paramilitary government agencies sent to tackle one, lone, old man.  He is not Bin Laden.

         And what one, lone, old man?  Last I saw he not only had family (shot with a tazer, remember?) and a thousand or so "friends" armed with AR15's and AK47's.
