If I write original content, and have a few introductory lines or paragraph from my hub on another site that links back to my hubpage - is that considered duplicate content here at HubPages?

No, I don't think so. You should be fine, although I prefer to rewrite rather than copy from the hub.

Yep! I always have the thesaurus handy to rewrite summaries and other article introductions.
