How-to, Hands-on ice massage for reducing labor pain

Tools needed: Crushed Ice and a small wash cloth (high tech, right)

Place small amount of crushed ice in the center or the washcloth.

Twist the cloth around the ice making a miniature ice bag.

At the  beginning of each contraction use the ice bag to massage the web of the skin between the thumb and forefinger continuously until the end of the contraction.

The pressure of the massage should measure about a four on a scale of one to ten: one being very light pressure and ten being pressure applied hard.

Experiment with massage on each hand to find which hands works best.

If the woman feels it does not help, stop.

It is not practical to attemtp to continue ice massage once she reaches the pushing stage. Plus the act of pushing relieves some of the pain.

Ask A Midwife, I don't mean to be rude, but I think it would be better if you put this info in a hub, or three hubs as the case would be. These are the forums, and people usually just post other stuff here, not articles. smile
