Black Ops vs. Black Ops 2

Call of Duty Black Ops

The most anticipated game for 2010 with its release on 9th November it brought a new multi player experience very different to that of C.O.D. world at war which Treyarch had produced previous to C.O.D. Black Ops. All new zombies, all new multi player, all new war zone and all new game play.

The multi player experience seemed to bring the player straight into the action with the small-medium sized maps. Snipers could be a little tricky to use at times, but could be used to the players advantage if they seek higher ground to pick of enemy targets. But for the assault, sub machine and Light machine gun class users its pure chaos on the battlefield. Certain maps caught my attention on the multi player function including Nuke town and firing range. Nuke town in particular as it had perfect scenery, size, layout and cover to play a great match. Firing range would be my second favourite map with a lot of those things which I have just described for the Nuke town map except the scenery could have been better.

Multi Player- Game Features

Prestiges- for the first time on a Call of Duty game there are 15 prestiges to complete rather than the usual ten, meaning even more hours of fun for the gamer.

Perks- there are some useful perks added to the game, which have never been seen previously in a Call of Duty game. They add to the players ability, chosen carefully can save your player from certain death.

Create-a-class- You can now for the first time customise your player slightly by using points earned to choose player camos. These help make your character more unique when entering into online battle.

Contracts- this adds to the challenges which a player has on multi player so if you use some of your points earner to buy a contract then it adds to your players objectives to receive extra XP.

Wager matches- there are now matches where you can enter, gambling a certain amount of your points, where if you come first, second or third on the match leader board then you win other players points from the match. The game modes for this include;

  • One in the chamber
  • Sharpshooter
  • Sticks and Stones
  • Gun Game

Zombies

Zombies mode, which was first introduced by Treyarch to the C.O.D. world at war game has returned with vengeance to C.O.D. Black Ops which is better than ever. The maps have improved, the guns have improved and the game play has improved. I was surprised to see just how great the zombies mode on C.O.D. Black Ops was and I enjoyed playing Zombies mode more than I did multi player mode. The original maps which came free with the game included Kino Der Toten and Five. Kino Der Toten was the best map I'd ever played on zombies, even better than the DLC zombie maps, as there was a great system on the map for dodging and killing zombies to get to the highest round possible. For those who have played C.O.D. Black Ops zombies on Kino Der Toten will most likely have used the circle system on the map as by running the circle around the map I got my highest round on the game. I personally used this system with a total of 4 people which I have been told works better with 2 people to get to my highest round.

For those wondering, my highest round on Kino Der Toten, the best zombie map ever created was 34. Something which I would like to know is if you believe Kino Der Toten to be the best Zombies map ever created by call of Duty...

Is Kino Der Toten the best zombies map ever created for Call of Duty?

The five map for zombies was interesting to play as it is set in the white house where you get the opportunity to play as President Kennedy (JFK), which was fun. But in all the maps I have played on C.O.D. Black Ops zombies that had to be the hardest. With the map being complex with all sorts of corridors and routes to take, all that kept happening to me is I would walk into a group of zombies then die. With that in mind I will move onto the other zombie maps for the game which include;

  • Dead Ops Arcade
  • Ascension (First Strike DLC)
  • Call of the Dead (Escalation DLC)
  • Shangri-La (Annihilation DLC)
  • Moon (Resurrection DLC)
  • Nacht Der Untoten (Original W.A.W Map)
  • Verruckt (Original W.A.W Map)
  • Shi No Numa (Original W.A.W Map)
  • Der Riese (Original W.A.W Map)

The game play for the C.O.D. Black Ops zombies was exciting to play and makes for hours worth of fun. With the fun of playing Online/with friends, killing zombies and attempting to reach the highest possible round, it has a lot to offer to the game. Something I have always said is that if Zombies was released separately to the rest of the game I would buy it as with the amount of endless fun that zombies mode brings, it may as well be a separate game.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2

Released on 13th November 2012, Call of Duty Black Ops brought the highly anticipated sequel to Call of Duty Black Ops (1). The game has now moved forward in time to the 2025 where we get to see Treyarchs look on future warfare with the current day weapons which you love. It seems a little strange, using current day weapons in a future warfare game but it seems they have not disappointed with a beautifully created game. The single player campaign moved swiftly from the previous C.O.D. Black Ops game. It was fun to play and the plot seemed reasonable with some very entertaining cut scenes telling the story.

The multi player which most Call of Duty fans play the game for were pleased to see the new killstreaks which were all new and exciting. This was where we got to see the futuristic side to the game with some future warfare killstreaks. The overall game play experience for C.O.D. Black Ops 2 was reasonable in my opinion with some great maps, better graphics, and all new weapons. But I am afraid to say that I was not blown away by the game play in any way which was a little disappointing as I have always loved playing C.O.D multi player. Not to say that it was bad but it just wasn't all that I hoped it to be and more like the previous Call of Duty games. On the plus side in C.O.D. Black Ops 2 we see the return of the Nuke town map except with a twist as it is now Nuke town 2025 set in the future. As well as Hijacked which is a map set on a boat out at sea which is a very fun map to play on whatever the game mode. With lots of others maps which include;

  • Aftermath
  • Cargo
  • Meltdown
  • Overflow
  • Yemen
  • Carrier
  • Drone
  • Plaza
  • Promenade
  • turbine
  • Express
  • Raid
  • Standoff

Multi Player- Game Features

Prestiges- there are 10 prestiges for C.O.D. Black Ops 2.

Perks- the perks have changed slightly since C.O.D. Black Ops (1), with some new and improved perks which benefit the gamer in their game play experience.

Create-a-class- You receive a reward after each prestige which allows you to purchase another class so that you can make different classes for different maps and game modes.

Killstreaks- the killstreaks have changed slightly since C.O.D. Black Ops (1) with some new killstreaks which will enhance the fun on the multi player function.

The multi player experience has changed from the transition between C.O.D. Black Ops (1) and Black Ops 2. There is no longer a wager mode or contracts which can be bought for extra XP to earn. But C.O.D Black Ops 2 has kept certain game modes which were introduced to C.O.D. Black Ops (1) for the first time as well as some new ones. These game modes are listed under party and include;

  • One in the chamber
  • Gun Game
  • Sticks and Stones

Something which I also enjoyed was on double XP weekends on the Nuke town 2025 as this was awesome in helping to rank up quicker with the plus side of being on the best map on the game.

Zombies

The zombies mode for C.O.D. Black Ops 2 has changed significantly to the zombies mode for C.O.D. Black Ops (1) or even C.O.D. world at war for that matter. The example game type for zombies mode on C.O.D. Black Ops 2 is tranzit which is where you can get on a bus which takes you around the very large map. This game type takes team work to survive, so if there are four of you in the game then you must work together to kill the onslaught of zombies. The perks are spread around the map, there are also a few guns which can be bought around the map off walls as well as hidden paths and doorways. The most annoying thing on tranzit though is the mystery box as when it moves around the map it can be annoying to get to especially if it moves all the way to the other end of the map. But overall a very fun new way to play zombies on Call of Duty with some other types of zombies which you can play. The other zombies types which you can play include survival and grief. The zombie maps include;

  • Bus Depot
  • Town
  • Farm
  • Nuke town (DLC)
  • Die Rise (Revolution DLC)
  • Diner (Revolution DLC)
  • Alcatraz island/Mob of the dead (Uprising DLC)
  • Alcatraz island/Cell block (Uprising DLC)
  • Resolution 1295/Buried (Vengeance DLC)
  • Resolution 1295/Borough (Vengeance DLC)

The overall game play experience for the game is very fun and for the first time in Call of Duty zombies we are seeing some very large maps as well as new concepts to playing the game mode.

Final Conclusion

In coming to a personal opinion on which of the two games I believe to be the best I would have to say Black Ops (1). I believe C.O.D. Black Ops (1) to be the best out of the two because it brought the best zombie map (Kino Der Toten) which is still my favourite zombies map. As well as this I also enjoyed the multi player experience more than I did on C.O.D. Black Ops 2 as enjoyed all aspects of C.O.D. Black Ops (1). Whereas the multi player experience on C.O.D. Black Ops 2 felt more like a chore.

I would like to know which of the two Call of Duty games you found the best so please tick one of the boxes below.
