Clive Barker's Jericho
The name Clive Barker alone brings a chill to the spine of half the people who are going to read this article. The other half is either too young to even be considering purchasing one of these games or has been living under a rock for a long time. English author Clive Barker is one of the most famous and renowned horror authors of all time. He provides the premise to this great game which in every way lives up to it's horror pedigree by delivering twisted imagery and originally frightening opponents. Play Clive Barker's Jericho and be prepared to be haunted by it's shocking visuals for weeks to come.
Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Condemned 2 resembles the freakishly satisfying classic Manhunt in the fact that it includes the gruesome deaths of many characters. A supernatural element is thrown into the mix that surprisingly adds a lot to the, already very frightening, story. This game features unique controls that allow you to use all elements of the environment, from slamming opponents head's into brick walls to bashing them with a toilet seat, it's all here. A great followup to it's very scary predecessor, Condemned 2: Bloodshot is a very dark memorable game that doesn't disappoint.
Dead Space
Isolation is a key element in any survival horror game. It's what keeps your heart pounding and your eyes wide, ready for whatever might be around that next bend. Dead Space takes this theory to a whole new level. What can be more isolating than the cold, dark atmosphere of being trapped along... in Dead Space. As a ship repair worker you are sent to repair communication equipment on a mining ship, but soon realize you are about to get more than you bargained for. Upon arrival you find the mining ship's crew slaughtered by beings of unknown origin. Using only an arsenal of old mining tools and repair equipment, you must fight your way through vicious alien hostiles if you ever want to see the light of day again.
Heavy Rain
Ok, so some of you hardcore gamers are looking at me with a somewhat confused look on your face. Is Heavy Rain really a scary game? It shouldn't take long before you answer yes, definitely. Heavy Rain has about as intense of a story as any game ever conceived. No, it doesn't contain supernatural beings or the always satisfying zombie hordes, but it does throw you into the crime filled world of four different characters whose path's cross in several different ways. How and when they cross is completely up to you as heavy rain has many, many, different story lines and endings depending on each and every choice you make. Your aim is to catch the Origami Killer, a ghostly serial killer who targets young boys and is tied to each unique character in his own special way. This game can play out differently no matter how many different times you play it and contains gut wrenching decisions that will have you questioning your actions for days. If you happen to die with a certain player, that player won't be coming back, so make each decision very wisely in this shocking, original thriller.
Siren: Blood Curse
This game comes at the survival horror genre in a completely different way. Instead of being a soldier or ex-cop, you play as several normal individuals who are plunged in the middle of a cult aftermath gone horrible wrong. When fighting is worthless, your only option is to run and hide. You will be running and hiding a lot in Siren: Blood Curse as the demon monsters can't be permanently killed. With bone chilling monster screams, and breathtaking ambushes, Siren: Blood Curse is not a game that you would want to play alone in the dead of the night.
Resident Evil 5
No PS3 horror game list would be complete without mentioning the grandfather of survival horror, Resident Evil. Resident Evil 5 uses the same control scheme and game play style as it's predecessor; adding much more intense moments, faster and bigger hordes of zombies, and very much improved graphics and gore. The action starts off in Resident Evil 5 from the very beginning and doesn't let up until you finish or turn your system off and go hide under your covers and, trust me, you'll be doing that a lot. Throw in the fact that they include a co-op mode ,that you can play with strangers, family or friends, and you have one of the best horror games to date.
