Time To Find A New Hobby

Are you bored with your life?

Time to find an exciting hobby!
Time to find an exciting hobby!

Hobby- "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation, a spare-time recreational pursuit."

Does it seem like you are spending too much of your precious time being a spectator instead of a participant? Do you lack diversion and excitement in your life? Do you need to find some new way to spend your leisure time?

If you answered yes to any, or all of the above questions, maybe it is time for you to find a new hobby!

How can you find the hobby that is just right for you?

The "list of hobbies" available for you to consider is definitely long and growing all the time.

Hobbies can be as diversified as becoming a collector, playing games, participating in outdoor recreation of some sort, cooking, gardening, singing, the list goes on and on. The biggest challenge you might face is finding out which hobby is just right for you. The best hobby is one that will fit your personality and your lifestyle.

There are actually sites with questions devised in a standard test form that can help you to figure out just that.

Answering a few questions can help you determine just what hobby you might be interested in:

  • How much time do you have? Some hobbies might be too demanding on your time limitations and might not be practical for your situation. Don't ever allow your hobby to become a burden...you are supposed to "enjoy" your time spent in a hobby.

  • How much money do you want to invest in your hobby? Some hobbies are costly and might be prohibitive depending on the budget you have for that area of diversion. There are many great hobbies that are inexpensive and enjoyable. You may choose to rent equipment you may need for your new hobby to see if you like it before you buy all the items required to participate in it.

  • Do you like to spend time indoors or outdoors? There are many advantages to each of these areas of choice. If you choose an activity that can be done indoors you are never deterred by the weather conditions and you can enjoy yourself in your own home. If you choose an outdoor activity you might look for possibilities that are open to you as close as your own backyard.

  • Do you want a hobby that you can enjoy with others or do you prefer to enjoy them alone? If you have social interaction at work and just desire some alone time, then you should choose a hobby that you can do by yourself. If however, you desire the company of others then a more social hobby would be desirable.

  • Do you enjoy working with your hands, or creating things? The answer to this simple question could open up a whole avenue of possibilities for you. From needlepoint to wood carving, there are a multitude of hobbies you can do if you get satisfaction from these areas.

  • Finally, what is your passion? Everybody has something that just sparks their interest, or lights a fire of interest to your soul. If you are uncertain as to what this might be, try something new. You might just find you have searching for that new interest all along.

Need some more ideas?

Here are four more exciting new hobbies you might like to try:

Why not try Car Art?

Why not design an "Art Car"!

Tired of driving your same old vehicle? Why not transform your car into an "Art Car" and become a part of the Art Car World. This hobby is one that takes just a little creativity, and a lot of imagination.

Harrod Blank, the founder and developer of the Art Car has fast turned this hobby into a nation wide craze. These Art Cars can be seen in parades, festivals and now in their own Art Car Museum.

Why let perfectly good food go to waste?

Road Kill Recipes for you to try

If cooking as a hobby only seems to whet your appetite, why not try cooking in a specialized area, perhaps like becoming a Road Kill Cook.

Becoming a Roadkill chef is quite a distinguished honor. The greatest competition is held in Marlington, West Virginia in September, so you have plenty of time to home in on your cooking skills.

Some participants who are enthusiasts are the Fat Boys Wilderness Club, they explained, "We've been doing this nine years. The Fat Boys are brothers, cousins, old military comrades, and it's a chance for us to get together and spend a fun weekend."

This is a hobby that is definitely a matter of taste, but as they say, "If it comes from the hood, it has to be good."

Punkin Chunkin World Championships

Enter the "Punkin Chunkin" contest.
Enter the "Punkin Chunkin" contest.

If you enjoy food, but not cooking...why not get involved with Punkin Chunkin?

Punkin Chunkin is actually a hobby that involves hurling a pumpkin by mechanical means over great distances in an attempt to hurl it the farthest. The methods used to hurl the pumpkins include slingshots, catapults, trebuchets, and pneumatic air cannons. Not only can the hobby include engineering skills, but you could use your gardening skills to grow the perfect pumpkin to chuck!

The cost of this hobby however might be taken into consideration, as the mechanical devises used to hurl the pumpkin are quite extensive. Perhaps, one might attend a competition first to ensure the interest is true.

Punkin Chunkin

I am not so sure Charlie Brown would approve of this hobby!

Lawn Mower Racing

To fill your need for speed.
To fill your need for speed.

If you desire a little more action, why not try Lawn Mower Racing?

For an outdoor adventurous hobby, why not try the "Grass Roots" motor sport of lawn mover racing.

These racing machines are originally commercial lawn mowers that were designed to simply mow lawns. The USLMRA (United States Lawn Mower Racing Association) has allowed for certain modifications to be done to the mower however, they must remain suitable for cutting grass. To race all the cutting blades must be removed from the mowers.

So get on the "cutting edge" of the sport and get out there and "kick some grass!"

Reading, following scientific discoveries, social networks, skiing, walking, studying catering/hospitality standards of British Royal household. Of course, I love to travel - (I had to be wind in my past life):

I would love to read a Hub about catering/hospitality standards of British Royal households...(hint hint! lol) Thanks for sharing!

That's a topic I'm holding more for myself and it's just a part of my previous business life, when I'd had some wonderful places and loads of guests from all walks of life. I also appreciate the present Queen so much, that I wouldn't dare to write about this topic, even though, I was very delighted by the visit of Price of Wales, once. (It is about security, protocol, butler service, top kitchen service, entertainment, transport facilities, other logistics, wine cellar, documentation, etc.)

You Dawg,

I have made you chief honorary Hubber. Some great ideas.

The Art car is a great idea. I hope they do not go like the Nude bodies in the thorum.

Another suggestion Join some club where you take elderly seniors on Bus rides (Scenic) or shopping. Val went once a week. She enjoyed it and it gave here another perspective. She did have one older lady did a years shopping and it nearly broke Val's coloarbone trying to lift the Bag.

Excellent hub O Mighty Hubber

Wow thanks for the mention :-) - you reminded me I need to update that hub! My "hobby" of dancing costs 10's 1000's of dollars but it keeps me fit and allowed me to find my life partner so is definitely worth it! I have never figured out how to combine dance and travel and now I have this new "hobby" of internet marketing - it must be a hobby - its not making a profit - but maybe one day!

Gosh you have virtually covered everything. Yes we all have hobbies, but sometimes need of money gets in the way, of not doing as much as we would like.

I love writing, Genealogy and my birds and dogs. And now hub pages.Of course.

This was well written and co-ordinated, especially adding some of the hubbers which added that extra touch of brilliance on your part. Well done thanks for sharing this. I nearly missed reading it.

Chef Jeff profile image

Chef Jeff 8 years ago from Universe, Milky Way, Outer Arm, Sol, Earth, Western Hemisphere, North America, Illinois, Chicago.

I enjoy model railroading, American Civil War and Old English (Anglo-Saxon/Viking) reenacting, writing, book collecting (my earliest edition is from 1648) and raising small gardens.

There are so many hobbies one can start - sometimes it simply takes the will to do so. And with kids (and many adults) today, with instant gratification as "the norm", doing something that takes time to develop often leaves many of us "bored".

Yet, taking time is so important, especially for families, and helps build people of character who can take a moment to smell the roses, instead of walking by at a brisk pace.

Loved the hub - keep up the great writing!

Chef Jeff,

WOW! I give you the prize for the most exciting diverse hobbies mentioned so far! I had a friend who collected model railroading, and had tons of trains. I took my little Cub Scouts over to his train room for a visit one time. It was amazing! Your additional comments to the Hub were enlightening and inspiring. Thank you as always for your support.

Chef Jeff profile image

Chef Jeff 8 years ago from Universe, Milky Way, Outer Arm, Sol, Earth, Western Hemisphere, North America, Illinois, Chicago.

I would also mention that reenacting is a family hobby - many families participate, with moms & kids dressing the part and learning what it was like "way back then."

WhenI had my railroad set up lots of cub & brownie & boy & girl scouts used to visit - quite a few of the girls took interest because of the detailed houses we had on the board! A few had great suggestions that we added to make the look & feel more correct, so it is a hobby that everyone can have fun with.

wannabwestern profile image

At the art museum here where I live, a retired friend puts together all of the dioramas. In a sense it is like model railroading--all those complicated miniatures. It takes up the entire second bedroom in his two-bedroom house!

I think lately my hobby has been Hubpages, cooking (homemade bread, pizza, etc), enduring pregnancy in creative ways and making greeting cards. With young kids I like to do things I can start and leave that won't be ruined if I put them away for a long time, or better yet, finish in just an hour or so.

In The Doghouse profile image

In The Doghouse 8 years ago from California Author

Chef Jeff,

I also have a dear family friend who actually purchased a large piece of land and now has Civil War reinactments and demonstrations there. His whole family is involved and they love it! It sounds like your family is having a ball with your hobby. My family loves to wakeboard together, and spend a lot of time during the summer doing that together. I too feel that family time is such an important thing today. Thanks for your added observations and comments.

In The Doghouse profile image

In The Doghouse 8 years ago from California Author

Western,

It sounds like your time constraints dictate your present hobbies! Making greeting cards sounds like it would be cool! Hehe I'm on here. :-) This is a very informative hub for people trying to find info about picking out the perfect hobby. I'll say in regards to mine (reptiles and breed them), there are so many people that forget the main keys- money and time. It takes money to properly house, feed, and incubate eggs, and a lot of time and patience in cleaning and dealing with them in general. So many people get into the hobby thinking it's cool and an easy way to make a buck, but don't realize how much it really entails.

In The Doghouse profile image

Whitney,

I think that good research is really important with any hobby that one might be interested in. I agree, any type of pet takes time and commitment. Your Hubs are certainly a great place to find that out! Thanks for your added comments.

Awesome HUB!!! This is so wonderful all the way around. Funny, entertaining and useful! By the way, I have to tell you, I had an eccentric great aunt who was an artist and really into car art. She created one many years ago (she lived in Berkeley - now, there is a surprise) that had sculptured cats lounging all over the car. Every now and again someone would steal a cat from her car. She never minded much. Crazy Aunt Shirley would just make another one and add it later.... :-)

I have seen lawnmower racing first hand, not by choice mind you! My ex husband is an engine builder (for race cars) and a former racer himself. There was a local guy who just adored him and "designed" his lawnmower after my ex's car. We went to see it and support him...It was absolutely hilarious.

These guys took it so seriously, and the whole time I was on the ground laughing my butt off. If you enjoy it, all the power to you! Hobbies keep you out of trouble! (hopefully)

Lawn mower racing was cute, but those modded mowers didn't look like they were making 60 mph in the video! I'm glad they've got a stock class. I don't think I'd get the kick out of it I can from racing an rc motorcycle or boat, though. Of course, I'm obviously biased! It's great that husband and wife both enjoyed it so much.
