LEGO Bionicles
10 YEARS OF BIONICLE!!
Bionicle is a line of toys by the LEGO Group marketed primarily at 6- to 16-year-olds. The line was launched on December 30, 2000 in Europe and June/July 2001 in Canada and the United States. It has recently been announced by the director of LEGO that they will stop making new Bionicle sets after Winter 2010 "for the foreseeable future". Bionicle will be replaced by Hero Factory, which was released later in 2010.
2001 - Quest for the Masks
The story begins with six Toa Mata: Tahu, Lewa, Gali, Kopaka, Pohatu, and Onua, arriving on an island known as the Island of Mata Nui, remembering nothing beyond their names. They discovered that the inhabitants, the Matoran villagers, face constant attacks from infected Rahi, savage beasts controlled by the powerful influence of Makuta Teridax through use of Infected Kanohi masks, causing a war which lasted about 1000 years. After searching for and finding numerous Kanohi masks, the Toa each receive a Golden Kanohi mask with tremendous power and seek out Makuta himself. After challenging the ferocious Manas crabs and the Shadow Toa (evil doppelganger-like illusional replicas of the Toa ), the Toa confront Makuta and defeat him by uniting their elemental powers.
2001 spawned the first 4 types of Bionicle:
The Turaga
The Toa/Toa Mata
The Rahi
The Matoran
THE TURAGA
Turaga were Toa who had fulfilled their destiny and given up their Toa Power. Unlike Matoran, Turaga could use Mask Powers, but only those of weaker Noble Masks. They also had minor control over their elemental power.
The Turaga were the wise leaders of the Matoran of Mata Nui and the Toa. Each village on Mata Nui had its own Turaga as its leader. On Metru Nui, the Turaga were originally Matoran who had been granted the powers of the Toa Metru by Toa Lhikan. After leaving Metru Nui, the Toa Metru gave up their Toa powers to revive the Matoran and live on Mata Nui. They have returned to Metru Nui and preside over the districts they lived in as Matoran.
The Turaga sets include:
Vakama #8540 was one of the Turaga of Mata Nui. He was once the Toa Metru of Fire.
Nokama #8543 was a Ga-Matoran. She would become a Toa of Water and a member of the Toa Metru, a Turaga of Water.
Matau #8541 was a Toa of Air on Metru Nui. He later became a Turaga of Le-Koro.
Onewa 8542 was the Toa of Stone in Metru Nui and Turaga of Po-Koro at Mata Nui.
Whenua #8545 was the Toa of Earth on Metru Nui and the Turaga of Onu-Koro.
Nuju #8544 was the Toa of Ice on Metru Nui and later the Turaga of Ko-Koro.
THE TOA/TOA MATA
The Toa Mata were the group of Toa who originally introduced BIONICLE and who first saved the island of Mata Nui from Teridax. These Toa later transformed into the Toa Nuva. It was their destiny to awaken the Great Spirit after he was put to sleep by Makuta Teridax.
The Toa/Toa Mata sets include:
Tahu 8534 was the Toa Mata of Fire on the island of Mata Nui.
Gali #8533 was the Toa of Water on the island of Mata Nui.
Pohatu #8531 was the Toa Nuva of Stone.
Lewa #8535 was the Toa of Air and protector of Le-Koro on the island of Mata Nui.
Kopaka #8532 was the Toa Mata of Ice on the island of Mata Nui.
Onua#____ was the Toa of Earth on the island of Mata Nui.
THE RAHI
Rahi were the animals in the Matoran Universe that were "created" by Makuta and the Great Beings using Protodermis. The word "Rahi" meant "not us" in an ancient Matoran dialect. Rahi lived anywhere in the Matoran Universe, from scorching heat, to freezing cold, to the deepest depths of the earth. All the factions in the Bionicle world had made use of Rahi, whether for transportation, corruption, or a supplement to their armies. The majority of the Rahi later imigrated to Spherus Magna and are now living there.
The Rahi sets include:
Nui-Rama #8537 were large, insect-like Rahi. The creatures have been seen as either orange or lime-green, and had a pair of massive claws and a stinger, which made them deadly foes.
Muaka & Kane-Ra #8538 were bull-like Rahi that were usually seen in Po-Wahi or Ko-Wahi on the island of Mata Nui and were native to Po-Metru on Metru Nui. Muaka&Kane-Ra were solitary omnivorous eaters and extremely territorial.
Manas #8539 Most species of Rahi are not very smart. They use their strength- not their wits- to battle their opponents. But the most dangerous Rahi, the Manas, were both smart and strong.
Nui-Jaga #8548 Nui-Jaga were huge scorpion Rahi with powerful stingers, whose strikes could be fatal. Most were slow and not very bright. They could be tricked by showing their reflection on a rock or wall. Being aggressive Rahi, they would attack the reflection, thus trapping their stingers.
Tarakava #8549 Tarakava were huge lizard-like Rahi who used their long forelegs to deliver stunning blows. They hunted in pairs and stayed in shallow waters, as predators they lived in deep water.
