How to enjoy your old age?Retirement is fun!

Updated on November 18, 2013

'Old age, believe me, is a good and pleasant thing. It is true you are gently shouldered off the stage, but then you are given such a comfortable front stall as spectator.'- Confucius

Old age should give you immense relaxation and satisfaction. You should not think yourself as old and forgo enjoyments in life. Of course your way of enjoying life will be entirely different from that of a young person. Your outlook towards life is more mature and mellow. If you plan your old age you can look back at the life you led with contentment and look forward to your future life with relaxed anticipation.

1. Be financially secure.

Your old age will be happy only when you are financially secure. So, it is necessary that you save for your future from the young age itself. When you are young you fail to understand that by the end of each day you are getting near to your old age. If you are not financially secure, it becomes an uphill task for you to live your life with self esteem. Never depend on your children for your day to day survival.

2. Your health is of paramount importance.

You should take extra care of your health so that you are agile and energetic. Old age is not an excuse for you to remain idle. Make it a habit to wake up early morning and enjoy the calm and take a brisk walk. You should be active so that you do not become obese.

3. Communicate with your friends

Sharing time with your friends can unwind your stress to a great level. You can go to their home and have good time with their family. Likewise you should invite them to your home and share happy hours with them.

4. You should be diligent about your diet.

Your diet should be rich in vitamins, minerals, calcium and iron. Do not eat oily food as it adds pounds to your body and also affects your aging heart. Eat fiber rich food. Fruits, green leafy vegetables are all good for your health. Cut down snacks and if you are hungry, have some fruits.

5. Be well groomed.

Some old people think that they need not pay any attention to their dressing and often sport ill fitting and shabby dress. You should pay attention to the way you dress as your outward appearance is important in getting attention and respect. Dress your age and do not try to show yourself off as a young person which make you the target of fun by youngsters. If on the other hand you dress with dignity you get the respect of everyone around you.

6. Internet is like an oasis.

It provides golden opportunity for you to earn from home and keep yourself occupied. You can choose from the wide range of earning opportunities available to earn some good money.

7. Do not be a judge of the younger generation.

When you pass comments about the decreasing values of the present generation it triggers negative resentment against you. Youngsters shy away from you fearing your biting comments. Instead, you should see the world from their point of view and build bondage with them by becoming their guide in times of their need.

8. Always sport a smile.

A smile is always infectious and you are looked upon as a person everyone can interact. You never feel left alone or lonely if you are friendly. If you are glum it gives the impression that you are unapproachable. If you create such an expression, people fear to interact with you and you feel the impact of loneliness. Believe me, loneliness is a terrible thing in old age.

9. Say no to cynicism

Never become cynical as cynicism can lead you to see the negative side of life. Negative attitude is like cancer which eats into your happiness and destroys relationship with your family. Cynicism is one of the reasons for the high spurt of old age homes throughout the world as it kills the good vibes you should have with your family.

10. Have positive outlook

Your positive approach should not slump at any moment of your life. Never feel let down and develop the feeling of helplessness. Your confidence level should be high and you should look forward to your old age with good morale.

‘It is utterly false and cruelly arbitrary to put all the play and learning into childhood, all the work into middle age, and all the regrets into old age.’-Margaret Mead

Old age is a coming process for everyone. It is not something to be dreaded. It is a god sent time for you to spend some time for yourself, involve in interests for which you had no time in your hectic work schedule. Hold your head high with self esteem and you will be sought for advice and guidance.
