What is Holistic Health

Updated on September 10, 2011

Life is nothing but a chain of experiences one after the other. As the experiences flow seconds pass into minutes and minutes pass into hours, days and years. And every single experience is in some way or the other is interconnected to the each other. Whatever actions we take, whatever thoughts we project into the cosmos is having an effect in to the flow of events and cosmic equation. This is what we call as law of causation (Law of Karma) and the only way to deal with it is to approach life with a holistic viewpoint, where every thing in the cosmos, in our lives is interconnected. Like in the cosmos various intelligent laws are working together but they all are interconnected to each other and influence each other, out body also is governed by certain interconnected laws.

As per Hindu Scriptures, our body actually is made of five sheaths (Panchkosha Mimansa) – we call these five sheaths as five koshas – Annamaya Kosha, deals with physical body and physical fitness, Pranamaya Kosha, deals with astral body and balance of energies in our body, Manomaya Kosha, deals with equanimity of mind, Vigyanmaya Kosha, deals with consciousness, awareness and Anandmaya Kosha, deals with eternal bliss which can only be achieved after refining all the five sheaths. To address all the health issues of the body a person needs to address and resolve disturbances in all the sheaths which simply means that just by addressing the symptoms of the illness one cannot get a healthy and fit body and a holistic approach has to be adopted to our body as well as it is adopted for the cosmos.

Holistic Health is nothing but to address the root cause of a particular illness and work out a solution to keep body fit at all five sheaths. Holistic Health as per Wikipedia is “a concept in medical practice upholding that all aspects of people's needs, psychological, physical and social, and mentally should be taken into account and seen as a whole......A different definition, claiming that disease is a result of physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental imbalance,”

There are various therapies, other than allopathy available in medical science, Ayurveda to treat the body and address the root cause of the problem and not just suppress the illness for the time being, which include Spa Therapies, Rasayan Chikitsa, Acupressure, Yoga Therapies etc. Infact a lot of problems of health can even by addressed by simply changing the lifestyle can also be termed as Lifestyle Therapy!!

Rise of Wellness industry is a result of ignorance in people about the art of living simple and balanced lifestyle. With a holistic approach to our life and by maintaining a balance at physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual level we can not only eradicate all negative energies of body but also say good bye to allopath forever.
