Rose-Colored Glasses

Updated on January 15, 2009

Rose-Colored Glasses

Definition:

a cheerful or optimistic view of things, usually without valid basis: He saw life through rose-colored glasses.

...And what's wrong with that?

If you got it...good. If you don't...no harm, no foul. Right?

Why not? Have you ever wondered if you were missing something, that everyone else around you seems to get? Maybe they see something that you don't? You are not alone. If ignorance is bliss, haven't you once in awhile just wanted to slap the smile off of their face? Don't we all, just once in a while find a wee bit of joy in just "bringing someone back down to reality?" Isn't it cruel of us to take it upon ourselves to do such a thing?  Who appointed anyone of us to be the anointed one who sits in judgement and decides its time to crash-land someone else's feelings?

We've all had our rose-colored moments...a few of us more times than others, but what the hell...Why take it away from someone else just because you may have removed your glasses? Or maybe you feel the need from retrobution, because some jerk stole your rose-colored glasses. Not everyone is a cynic (though many times I can't imagine why.) Everyone has a different "take" on what's happening in this world. If you can be optimistic without an actual reason... I say roll with it. The world needs more of you in it. At least you are open to possiblities and potential.

A child-like spirit, with a cheerful attitude and a sense of wonder. I think needs to be encouraged. Not in the sense that someone with such abandon should not be left unaware of "dangers that might lie in their path" nor  should someone who is carefree be aloud to become reckless. But if someone (maybe you) is open to being lighthearted..why should that be diminished?

There is a difference between child-like and being childish. Keep the excitement of the moment, but do not become too self-centered in your point of view that nothing else matters except for getting your own way.

Pay attention to where you are going and be aware of the signs around you...That doesn't mean that you can't be lighthearted. After all the world is a wonderous place. Remind yourself that no matter how grim a situation may seem, things always change. There is always potential for new beginnings, and new adventures.

Use caution and self-control, but also be encouraged to use your sense of humor. You may find a new dimension to yourself emerging.

"Rose-Coloured Glasses" by Blue Rodeo

Lyrics to "Rose-Coloured Glasses" by Blue Rodeo

She sees the world through rose-coloured glasses

Painted skies and graceful romances

I see a world that's tired and scared

Of living on the edge too long

Where does she get off telling me

That love could save us all, save us all.

She takes my hand and leads me to nowhere town.

No matter where I stand it's always neutral ground,

And in the cool of the evening blue

I feel so tired and alone

Where does she get off telling me

That love could save us all, save us all.

And it's day after day

I keep hanging around can you tell me why

Night after night, yeah I know I should leave

But there's something in those eyes

That keeps me hanging on, I'm hypnotized

It breaks my heart and I don't know why

Tell me why, tell me why

She sees the world through rose-coloured glasses

Painted skies and graceful romances

I see a world that's tired and scared

Of living on the edge too long

Where does she get off telling me

That love could save us all, save us all

And it's day after day

I keep hanging around, can you tell me why

Night after night, yeah I know I should leave

But there's something, yeah, yeah...

Day after day after day after day

And I don't know

Day after day after day after day

And I don't know why.
