The skin care industry is a multibillion dollar business, especially when you throw in all of the anti-aging and wrinkle-removing creams. As women want more and more to not only feel younger but look younger as well, this industry will continue to grow. There are so many products, it is hard to know which ones to buy and which ones actually work. But unknown to many, it is hard to know exactly what these products are made out of and what ingredients they contain. Some ingredients in these products can actually get into the bloodstream and produce what is called systemic toxicity. Some skin care products, while seeming to be working, are actually causing more damage than good. Some skin care products have been tested on animals and still others made by the company, Neocutis, have been made with aborted fetal material.

About the Company

Neocutis, Inc. is located in San Francisco, California and is a bio-pharmaceutical company that focuses on wound healing, dermatology and skin care. It was founded in February 2003 as a spin-off from the Medical School of the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland. The company boasts of using a proprietary skin care ingredient called Processed Skin Cell Proteins(PSP®). This key ingredient comes from the skin tissue of a 14-week gestation electively-aborted male baby donated by the University Hospital in Switzerland.  A cell bank was established from the fetal skin which contains cultured skin cells to produce the human growth factor needed to restore aging skin.

Products Containing the Cell Line

There are four products made by Neocuits that contain the cell line from the fetal skin:

Bio-restorative Skin Cream - The first skin cream formulated with Processed Skin Cell Proteins has been "clinically proven to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles after two months of daily use."

Lumiere Bio-restorative Eye Cream - is made with 30% more processed Skin Cell Proteins. This cream is used to revitalize and rejuvenate the delicate eye area.

JOURNEE Bio-restorative Day Cream - "The most complete anti-aging day cream with PSP®, anti-oxidants, hyaluronic acid and UVA/UVB protection SPF 30+ to rejuvenate, protect and hydrate skin."

BIO-BEL Bio-restorative Hydrogel - "Unique Hydrogel Combines the power of PSP® and Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid to help restore elasticity and radiance to stressed skin."

These products can be found all over the Internet, including Amazon.com

Ethical Issues Raised

Using an aborted fetus so that women can look younger raises moral and ethical issues for many. Some pro-life groups are calling for a boycott of all Neocutis products. One pro-life group in particular, called Children of God for Life are suggesting that if women have these products to throw them in the garbage. The group also said that they will "give free publicity to cosmetic companies who are not using immoral ingredients in their products."

Children of God for Life has been a watchdog on pharmaceutical companies using aborted fetal cell lines in medical products and they have received thousands of inquiries from the public on the use of aborted fetal material in cosmetics.  Until now, this was the first time they have encountered any company bold enough to put the information right on their own website and product literature.
