Time present and time past

Updated on January 18, 2016

“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry — all forms of fear — are caused by too much future and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

Time is really a wonderful thing. It has no beginning and no end. It cannot be commanded. We have invented dates, days and years to indicate and measure it in our own way, but it is immeasurable. Most of us live out our lives in the world of time with memories of past and anticipation of the future. We rarely touch the timeless dimension of the present in moments of sudden loveliness or sudden threat, in meeting with a lover or with the surprise of the unexpected. Very few people step out of the world of time and mind its desires and appeal and begin to live in the world of timeless. Insightful was the one who discovered the door to living his life in the timeless dimension of the present. He devoted his life to advocate others to seek the same door, to step out of the world of present, future and rediscover for themselves the world of eternity. Nothing has to be achieved, everything that is possible is at the present moment. The present is eternal here and now. In reality past is memory and the future is only imagined. Past, future belongs to mind, not to exist.

The term present can be used only to something that is experienced at the moment between past and future. We divide time into three parts, past, present and future, the outcome of our limited vision. When the present is no longer visible, it is future.

The present moment is all there ever is. Still, most people ignore it, imagining the future or the past, stuck in their thinking minds. The present moment is masked by the egoistic mind wanting to get to some imaginary point in the future, or reliving the past. Present moment awareness is the end of the ego and end of illusion. Be aware that it knows this, and will resist you staying present. So many of our problems, unease, anxieties, fears etc. Are all based on our minds, in time - dwelling in the past, or conditioned by the past and then negatively anticipating "the future". Time exists only in the mind.

According to Julian Barbour’s solution to the problem of time in physics and cosmology is as simply stated as it is radical: there is no such thing as time. "As we live, we seem to move through a succession of Now’s," says Barbour, "and the question is, what are they?" For Barbour each now is an arrangement of everything in the universe. "We have the strong impression that things have definite positions relative to each other. I aim to abstract away everything we cannot see (directly or indirectly) and simply keep this idea of many different things coexisting at once. There are simply the Now’s, nothing more, nothing less."

A philosopher of physics look at them as a tool for measuring, time was invented by man as a means of measurement and nothing more. When did time gain magical powers? Time is a very handy tool, but people have to remember, math is not reality! Math is a tool like a mile or liter etc. Time is in the same category as all other measurements, they don’t exert a force on the physical world. When you die, all the physical matter and energy that make you up doesn’t cease to exist. It all existed in another form before you were born.

And when we seriously consider the simple but essential concept of “now we begin to understand that both past and future must be real because they could be your now, which means past, present and future – are all equally real and all exist.

You can take the example of a bird in the wings, it is flying you are viewing from the peeping hole, you will see it only when it comes in front of your viewing position, but the bird was flying, you could see it, then it is present, when the bird has flown away it is past, and before it was seen that is future.

Man is afraid of death. The fear of death is due to ignorance. The Vedas {are the ancient scriptures or revelation of the Hindu teachings} declares that man should have the courage to be in the space less and timeless dimension which the soul in us opens up at the time of death. This is the moment of joining the infinite space and timeless dimension.

“Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.”
