Top six resolutions for a New Year! Changes your life!

Updated on October 31, 2014

‘People need revelation, and then they need resolution.’- Damien Lewis

For many New Year is a day to make resolutions. You feel that as the New Year dawns you have to make changes in your life. But in actual fact you make resolutions on that particular day and coolly forget about it for the rest of the days of that year.

I too make some resolutions with the hope to see some changes in my life. On the day the year 2014 dawned I made a resolution that I should start a blog dealing with relationship problems. I look back with a small sense of pride that I have a blog of my own which give me the freedom to express my thoughts about marriage relationship.

Why do you attach so much of importance to New Year Resolutions? You feel that New Year is a good day to make decisions to change your life. You want to start your life with renewed vigor and energy.

What sort of resolutions do you make?

  • You decide to forgo your drinking or smoking habits.
  • You plan a new home.
  • You promise yourself to work hard for success in your profession.
  • You plan vacations to exotic places.

But do you make efforts to make your resolution a reality? You are very concentrated for a few days and you feel you are making good progress towards your resolution. But as days go by your efforts loses its momentum and you are back to what you were before.

What is the use of making an impulsive resolution when you do not work towards it? Unless you are totally concentrated on changing your life or forgoing your negative habits your resolution never materializes.

Actually you should make some changes in your life year after year. Otherwise your life never undergoes any positive changes. You should make serious efforts to implement your resolutions. You should imprint your decision in your mind and your action should follow suit.

When you think and do not act you would forget your resolutions. How many of you have forgone the habits which you decided to let go in a New Year’s Day? Most of you wouldn’t have tried it enough, I am sure.

If you look at the resolutions you make, it is always related to money, wealth and affluence. You decide on a big house, latest car, trendy dresses and modern gadgets. Have you ever made a resolution to repair your broken relationship? Have you ever decided that you should do some charity?

You never make resolutions regarding your character. There might be some negative characteristics in you. You might be very temperamental. You should decide to forgo your anger. You might be a spend thrift. You should take a resolution to spend wisely. It is such resolutions which are life changing.

What exactly are worthwhile New Year resolutions?

The following resolutions will make you a better person anytime, any year or any era in fact.

1. Help others!

Helping others gives you mental and psychological satisfaction that you are a good human being. You need not shell out huge amount of money to help others. The mindset to help others itself is very noble. There are lots of orphanage and old age homes which need volunteers. You can lend a helping hand and spend some time with the deprived.

2. Let go negative approach!

It is very easy to feel negative as it needs no work. When you think negatively such thoughts easily find its way to your mind. But to be positive is very difficult. It needs immense will power to fight against odds. Make a resolution to say no to negative thoughts.

3. Spend quality time with your family!

In your tight work schedule you forget the importance of family life. You want money and more money as you feel you need it for the betterment of your family. But when you do not spend quality time with them, the money you earn becomes worthless.

4. Healthy habits!

Promise yourself that you will avoid alcohol and smoking. You should also make resolutions to avoid unhealthy food habits and eat nutritive food which make you healthy. Health is wealth and so you should give top priority to maintain your body.

5. Learn new things!

It is never late to learn new things. Learning is an ongoing process which will continue till the day you live. My uncle is a linguist and he can speak ten languages fluently. You know what his every New Year resolution is? He pledges to learn a new language and he does so with fervor and his age is seventy five. Age is never a deterrent for learning.

6. Enjoy life

Do not spend your time in hectic work and fail to enjoy life? Life is short and you cannot get back the days you have lost. Enjoy the pleasures of life. Have fun time with friends, go for vacations, relax with your family, visit your parents and make your life enjoyable.

“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.” –Edith Lovejoy Pierce

New Year come and goes with fleeting resolutions. Do not let your resolutions be just a passing decision made without sincerity. Work towards it and make it happen.
