A Christmas Memory From Long Ago
That One Special Tree
A special time, as if it were yesterday,
in my memories, that I hold so dear,
The trips we made, with my father then,
to find a Christmas tree of cheer.
As we arose in an early morning's light,
the excitement and fun did grow,
We gathered up our ax and warm coats,
and then off, in the car, we'd go.
The red sun greeted us as we arrived,
in the place, for our treasure to find,
The scent of pine and the fresh air back then,
are so etched upon my mind.
We traveled on country roads of dirt,
all unpaved and so unblemished in time,
Our quest was granted by the family,
and as knights, ours a journey, so sublime.
We would search the wooded lands near by,
to find just that one right tree,
The smell of green cedar, then so fine,
seems I'm there, and so real to me.
My father taught habits of caution and great care,
as he chopped and trimmed our tree,
Then we'd drag our trophy to the car,
and tie it on the top, for others to see.
My sisters at home could then hardly wait,
for us to pot and secure the prize,
When we arrived, we'd all bring it inside,
for its shape and to measure its size.
Once this was done, we'd all pitch in,
with ornaments, on our fine tree, we dressed,
Bright tinsel, and lights placed, then turned on,
in its memory, we were so blessed.
