Christmas Memories with Mom and Dad
Merry Christmas to all!
Long ago Christmas
Christmas time brings memories of a time long ago..........
stories of special Christmas's , I think you should know
Days when snow was on the ground and the ponds were hard with ice
skaters swayed and spun around falling once or twice
Mama was waiting in our toasty warm kitchen
making cookies shaped like Santa’s of old
heating chocolate milk to drink
when we ran home, shivering cold
We popped some corn on the old wood stove
to decorate the tree,
then Daddy would sit the Star on top
for everyone to see
I remember there was always a crate full of oranges
and a big box of red apples, too
white and red candy canes on the tree
and round balls of red, green and blue.
There wasn't much money for presents some years
but we always managed to find
a hand made doll or mittens made by Mama
or a very special gift of some kind.
We would wake up early on Christmas Morning
and Mama would start to bake
banana cream pies and coconut and apple
and her "special mincemeat chocolate cake".
We helped when we could ... with the peeling and chopping
sang Christmas carols and laughed the whole day
then when dinner was over and the dishes were done
we would sit down ..with our new toys.. to play
As we grew older with kids of our own
Christmas eve was our favorite day
we would gather at Mamas, though she had a new name
"Granny" is what the grandchildren say
Daddy became Grandpa, he was our own gentle giant
he was tall with dark curly hair
he wasn't very old when the Lord took him to heaven
his heart hurt and he needed God's care
Many things have changed since those long ago days
but each Christmas just keeps getting better
we still sing the carols and bake Mama's special cake
and write Christmas Poems and Newsletters!!!

A cute poem I wrote the Christmas before Gary proposed to me in March! Snowy photos are taken at Lake Tahoe and the choral group was at a restaurant in Winsor, CA.
