How to Make Bread Dough Christmas Ornaments

A tradition that my family enjoys each Christmas is to make homemade ornaments. Our tree is filled with handmade ornaments. Many of these were made in school, when my three sons were young. Now I enjoy making ornaments with my grandchildren, (or even just by myself). My favorite ornaments to make are ones made from bread dough.

In this hub, I will show you how these can easily be made. There is no sugar or oil in these ornaments, so they will last for years.

Preheat your oven - 300 degrees.

• 4 cups plain flour
• 1 cup salt
• 1 1/2 cups water
• Acrylic paints
• Spray varnish

Mix all ingredients. Knead dough as if making bread. Form into a ball. If necessary, add very small amount of water. Roll out your dough to approx. 1/2 inch thick. Cut with Christmas cookie cutters. Simple shapes, such as trees, stars, snowflakes, gingerbread men work best. Make a hole with a straw at the top of the ornament to hang. Bake your ornaments for one hour. Let sit for 24 hrs. Ornaments should be completely dry. Paint with acrylic paint. Allow to dry another 24 hrs., than spray with clear varnish. Hang and enjoy.

To make your new ornaments even more special, be sure to make them personal.  Let each child paint their own, even if not a perfect paint job.

Have each child sign their name on the back, (after the front is dry).  Be sure to also write the year.  A small photo printed on plain paper could also be glued on, and than sprayed with the clear varnish.

Add stickers, glitter, jewel beads for an even more special ornament.
