Some Things I Really Hate While Driving

Okay, I’m not exactly the driver here. My husband is the one who drives me around town (and even out of town). Why? Well, because he is a good driver. Second, we have a manual car and although, in theory, I can drive a manual car, I’m really more comfortable with an automatic car. However, this doesn’t mean that I just sit back, in queenly fashion and let him do all the work. Whenever we travel for long distances, I make sure I don’t fall asleep (no matter how sleepy I am). Since I know a little bit about driving and road rules and I’m better in knowing directions, I sort of assist him in his driving. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a backseat driver (ask my husband, he’ll tell you exactly the same thing). I just feel that two pairs of eyes and ears are better than one pair.

That said; there’s another thing I share with my husband, and that is our pet peeves when it comes to driving. We often take 4 or 6 – hour long trips to other cities and, boy, do we end up venting our frustration and annoyance during the trip. So, in memory of these times, I compiled the ten things that I (or we) hate while driving. Before I go on, let me just clarify. This is driving on a highway with one to two lanes each side and with no barricade between the opposing lanes. This is not driving on a super-highway or a freeway or an expressway (as we call them here). So on with the 10 things.

Text – or Call – Addicts. Okay, I know we are the texting capital of the world and I find it kind of funny that we are called such. But when I see a car in front or beside us slowing down because the driver is texting or talking to somebody over the phone, I don’t find that quite as funny anymore. I mean, why not just pull over while doing any of these things? It may just save you from an accident or accidentally hitting anything or anybody and may also spare the driver of the car behind you from getting angry at you.

Men (or Women) Walking on the Moon. Not literally, of course. I’m referring to those guys and gals who cross the street unhurriedly, as if they are walking on the moon and there are no incoming cars anywhere. And then when you honk your car’s horn, they’ll just look at you as if saying “Wait! I’m still crossing the street.” Oh man, hurry up!

Living Room Extension. Highways here (and I guess anywhere else in the world) have “shoulders” for emergency purposes or for short stops. But sometimes, they’re used for another thing – as a place to hang out a.k.a. living room extension. Several times, we have seen people sitting on the edge of the highway while talking with other people. And that piece of the road was on the other side of a curve with a blind spot! I mean, hello! Don’t you know that is dangerous?

Overtaking…On a Blind Spot! This one happened just recently, like yesterday. Our car was going through a curve and there were two or three cars approaching us from the opposite lane. Then suddenly, on the opposite lane, we saw this bus overtake the last car on the curve, in a blind spot! The #&#@($#$% driver flashed his lights at us to make us slow down. Er, not bloody likely. To avoid the head-on collision, my husband just went through the shoulder (see why number 3 is dangerous?), giving all three vehicles enough space to pass each other by.

Motorcycles, Bicycles…In the Middle of the Street. Technically speaking, the bicycles should not be allowed on a highway but I don’t think we’re really that strict here. So when we go out, we often see bicycles, motorcycles and tricycles (three-wheel vehicle used for transportation around here) along the highway. They’re fine but they have a habit of hogging the whole lane, making it difficult for us to overtake them. It really annoys us especially if we know they know we are just right behind them and waiting to overtake them (if we don’t overtake, it will really, really, really delay us because they are soooooo slooooowwwww).

Intersection Maniacs. There’s this one time, our car was just 200 meters away from an intersection. Again, we’re on a highway, we’re supposed to be in the right-of-way, right? Unfortunately, this pick-up truck driver coming in from the right street didn’t seem to know this. He just came barreling up (the street was inclined) and turned right without even stopping to look if there was an approaching vehicle. Fortunately, we were still a few meters away. A few seconds and there would really be a collision between our vehicles.

Slowpokes. Okay, here’s the deal. We don’t mind seeing a vehicle overtake us. We don’t even mind when the car we want to overtake actually overtakes the car in front (making it not possible for us to overtake at the same time). But sheeesssh, please don’t overtake at a very slow speed. Nothing is too painful to watch as a slow car trying to overtake another slow car. Nothing is too frightening to watch as two cars running side by side (the other is on the opposite lane) and then seeing another car approaching from the other lane!

You Can’t Overtake Me. My husband has this endearing quality of slowing down and giving way when he sees a much-faster vehicle behind us trying to overtake us. I wish every driver is like that, unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen that way. There are drivers who seem to think that they shouldn’t be overtaken by any other car. They speed up, slow down, go left, go right, anything to avoid being overtaken by the car behind them (like ours). And to top it all, our car is faster than theirs! Road courtesy, man, road courtesy.

No signals. In fairness, I seldom see this. But seldom is more than enough. There are just drivers out there who do not bother to signal when they’re going either right or left. And it makes us hopping mad when we are following such a car. It’s good if the road is clear and the space between us is wide enough for braking. What if it’s not?

Late Warning Devices. I don’t know why they call these early warning devices. I mean, they just put the device a few feet away from the vehicle, making it virtually useless in terms of warning the incoming vehicles. And some drivers / vehicles evidently don’t carry these devices. I see some devices made out of branches and leaves! Er, shouldn’t these be called late warning branches/leaves instead?

Well, that’s it for the 10 things that I hate when my husband and I are out driving. There are still a lot more but these are the usual ones we encounter out there. What about you? What sets you off when you’re out driving?

Note: Since I have decided to join the October hubchallenge, this is my first hub for this October =).

Just last night, I had three instances where I would have loved to just hit someone with a tomato (I wish I had a few of them at the helm). I had one person that was I think lost and going 10 miles below the speed limit and hogging two lanes of traffic, another person who was a slow-turner (I hate those), and yet another who was making a left turn at the light as I was following behind who SLOWS DOWN at the end of the turn as traffic is coming toward me!!! Ahhhh!!!!

Thanks for the road rage rant, Emie! Bad drivers suck!!!

You're welcome wildlifelover. The blue box is the 'link' capsule with a blue color. There are 3 options for colors when you edit the 'link' capsule, just choose the blue one.

Where do I find this capsule and how do I include it in with my text ?

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

When you make / edit a hub, there are capsules at the top right most part of the hub. click the capsule that you want then scroll down to the lower right hand corner where you will find the actual capsule. Drag the capsule where you want to put it then click "reorder now". Once reordering is complete, go to the actual capsule (on the left side) and click 'edit'. You can then start to edit it. Hope this helps.

elisabeth, unfortunately, lots of drivers are like that. It's getting to the point where we are questioning what kind of driving education they got, if they got any in the first place. Some of these are basic road courtesy that every driver should know. Sometimes when we go on the road, I would really really brace myself for anything to happen while on the road. At least once per year I read about a person - usually a child or elderly person getting killed crossing the street.

People slow down then stop to let them cross... invariably some selfish idiot sees the stop cars and an open lane on the left and just flies through it with out a second thought as to "why" the cars are stopped in the other lane(s) and they plow right though someone killing them.

I see it all the time. It is way too easy to get a drivers license. Cell phones are a huge problem I can not tell you how many distracted drives I have seen barely avoiding accidents while they chat away clue lessly on the phone.

It's time to restrict driving to those who are worthy to drive and eliminate the distractions. Cars are deadly and should be treated with respect.

Driving is a privilege not a right.

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

Sage Knowles, I forgot about that. Here it's not only the parents, the jeepney, and tricycle drivers as well. I think they think they think they own the road.

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

Mike, hmmm, you're not talking about my country are you? I can see that the things I stated above are experienced by a lot of drivers in other parts of the world. Man, the crossing through the left lane because the other lane stopped is scary, it's downright suicidal. Cell phones are great but on the hands of drivers driving their cars, they're a menace.

Driving is a privilege not a right - definitely agree on this.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a rant, er a comment. Feel free to drop by anytime.

opinion duck  says:

I am sorry, but you missed so many other real dangerous driving examples.

This is not my hub, but just for an example, what I like to call the crazed optimistic driver. This driver on the highway with multiple lanes approaches the congested all lanes occupied scenario. This driver approaches that condition at high speed as if there was a path or hole to go through. The more lanes the more zigs zags this driver makes trying to make a path.

Strangely, sometimes this tactic works.

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

opinion duck, er sorry, but this is my hub and it's personal. I did qualify at the beginning that I'm talking about a highway with maximum of four lanes, two on the other side, because this is what we have here. And our experience is limited to this set-up only. What you provided as an example, we haven't experienced because it is a different scenario and it pertains to a freeway / superhighway / expressway, which I specifically stated is not a scenario for this hub. But then again, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. You're right, your example is really a dangerous one. If it works, well and good (for the driver only, not the other people on the lane). If it doesn't then all hell breaks loose.

When driving on the highway-You should expect that there will be slow drivers and fast drivers. Its normal for different folks-to drive-differently.I-dont-hate anyone-for that-But what I do-hate-is a slow driver who-gets in the left lane (the fast lane)and plants themself there.Its-virtually-impossible to pass the slow driver-who-is-in the right lane-when the driver in the left lane is driving-just as slow.It drives me insane being trapped behind 2 lanes of slow drivers(drivers who are side-for miles and miles-and-going so slow-that they are almost-standing still)

A POEM ABOUT DRIVERS-BY JOANNE HAMLETT

THERES-SOMETHING-U-should-KNOW-THAT-WILL-ALWAYS-BE-TRUE

You-cannot-MOVE-A-slow-driver-NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.

IF-THE SLOW-DRIVER REFUSES-TO BUDGE-AN INCH.

Your muscles WILL-tighten+Your-fists-WILL-clinch.

THEN-Ever-so-bold-You'LL-turn-off-of-the-road-

Your-tires-squealing-

from--puSHING-the pedal to the metal

AND-AS YOU-PASS-THE-SLOW-DRIVERS--U-GET-a-great-feeling.

THEN-a-tricky-manuever-PUTS-YOU-back-on-the-road-really-FAST

ThankING-The GOOD-Lord-THAT-YOU ARE-Free-At Last!

BUT-the folks-you-passed-THINK-you're-A REALLY-BAD-GUY

+They-PRAY-TO-The-Lord-AS-THEY-LOOK--TO THE SKY.

-WISHING-U-GONE-4EVER-+GREATFUL-that-THEY-DIDNT-DIE.

I ONLY WROTE THIS TO SHOW THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAVE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PROSPECTIVE THEN WHAT WE DO-ON WHAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE RIGHT AND WRONG- AND THINGS THAT THEY-HATE OR THINGS THAT THEY LOVE-OR-THINGS-THAT-THEY-FEEL ARE-ACCEPTABLE OR UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIORS. Developing tolance and an understanding of another-persons- point of view-that is totally different from our own-will-truely-take-us to an all new level-as compassionate-educated-human beings.

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

Uhm, welcome to hubpages! Hope you feel better after getting that off your chest. In that poem, and in my honest opinion, the fast driver was equally at fault because he resorted to underhanded means to get ahead, without regard to his and the other folks' safety. That said, why in the world are you going to drive in the left lane if you know you are slow? That is basic traffic courtesy. As I said above, if you know that the car behind you is faster than you and that driver wants to overtake your car, slow down and let him go ahead of you. Again this is basic road courtesy.

YellowBrickRose  says:

I hate being stuck behind a car that is going 30 on a 40 mph road. Even when I am not particularly in a hurry, it is ANNOYING to be stuck behind someone who just will NOT SPEED UP. And the next thing I know, there are three more cars behind me, so now I'M the slow driver. Rrrrgh.

Moonwalkers irritate me, too. I mean, hi, there are CARS COMING. Just because you have the right of way doesn't mean you're too good to use a crosswalk at the right time!

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

YellowBrickRose, you're definitely not alone. Some drivers refuse to speed up. I don't blame them that's their choice. But they should also respect that there are cars behind them with drivers who want to overtake them and give way for these cars.

Moonwalkers eh? That's a good term. Might use that here when I edit this hub. Thanks for your comment.

The thing that really gets me (and my dad) is when (even when there are two lanes) a lorry over takes another lorry but goes about 1mph faster than it. So it takes 10 minutes for the lorry to actually pass. Then all the traffic builds up behind them and you get stuck for ages going at 20 mph instead of 70. HATE it!

"What about you? What sets you off when driving?" you asked I will tell you two things: first, the driver who does not know what MERGE means. They stop in the onramp and wait for a gap (that never appears). I call these drivers merge-idiots. Second, the driver who get furious at me for driving slowly, when they don't realize that I am stuck behind another vehicle and can only go as fast as the one infront of ME! When they whip out to pass and flip me off, they then see the reason why I was going slow. And one more for free lol: akin to the above mentioned driver, the one who follows so closely, thinking that this will make me go faster. Good hub. Thank you. And thanks for your kind words the other day, and for being one of my fans! :)

LOL, your second reminds me of the times when my husband gets angry because the car in front of us is slow. But since I can see from my side of the car if there's another car (or a slowpoke passenger vehicle / motorcycle) in front, I tell him to be patient because that driver cannot do anything.

On the following closely, bbbbrrrr I don't want to think about that. It's a recipe for an accident. Especially if the car in front of you has busted tail lights. Good luck.

Thanks for your contribution to my hub. I think I'm going to have enough materials for my next hub :).
