and finally the moment we've all been waiting for....
Isn't it obvious???!!!....... #1 ~~~ National Lampoon's "Vacation"
John Hughes wrote a piece for National Lampoon's magazine called Vacation '58 and when it was converted into a film it launched the greatest comedy script writer ever along with Woody Allen. This is first and his best which let's face it, is almost always the case.
National Lampoon's "Vacation" ~~~ 1983
Clark Griswold and his family are traveling across country to the ultimate family vacation destination Disn---ummm Walley World! They will endure at least 25 things that will make you laugh out loud! Here's a sample of my personal favorites...
- Now, I owe it to myself to tell you, Mr. Griswold, that if you are thinking of taking the tribe cross country, this is your automobile. The Wagon Queen Family Truckster. You think you hate it now, but wait till you drive it.
- I got laid off when they closed that asbestos factory, and wouldn't you know it, the army cuts my disability pension because they said that the plate in my head wasn't big enough.
- Hey, hey, easy kids. Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes... or perhaps you don't want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the earth, which is only four short hours away?
- I don't give a frog's fat ass who went through what. We need money! Hey, Russ, wanna look through Aunt Edna's purse?
- I'm making out a check for $1000, all you have to do is give me $300 in cash and keep the $700, all for doing nothing more than acting like a total creep.
- Roll 'em up!
- O God, ease our suffering in this, our moment of great dispair. Yea, admit this kind and decent woman into thy arms of thine heavenly area, up there. And Moab, he lay us upon the band of the Canaanites, and yea, though the Hindus speak of karma, I implore you: give her a break.
The Trailer!
The St. Louis Arch will never be the same to you!

hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!
Oh shizack. Yeah I can't be mad at that. Props!
Fantastic job! I love that you included Bottle Rocket, Harold and Maude, and Being John Malkovich... I'd argue that The Naked Gun should be listed also, but all things considered, this is pretty impressive.
Poor little fella he probably kept up for the first few miles..
Well, you know, we all have our favourite lists of funny movies and this is as good as I could imagine, with one exception. You've only got one Monty Python, and it's the Holy Grail, when anyone knows the greatest Python movie is the Life of Brian.
Love that movie! Thanks for the list too.. couple on their I need to see!
I've never seen Life of Brian all the way through. I gotta see it again based on that review!
Somebody should make a 100 Best Sketch Comedies hub
Hello DJ, I haven't seen some of the movies you have up there, but it's a great list! I'm glad you put South Park up; the famous "unmentionable organs" speech at the end was epic!
You forgot Spaceballs. Totally classic comedy
I actually didn't forget it. It was on this list in the beginning but then i re-watched it and realized that it's pretty frickin lame and dated. It'll be in the Top 200.
May the Scwartz be with you! eeeesh!
Finally, you've done it !!!! Fantastic ! And what a choice for #1 ! ! Gotta admit, hadn't noticed it missing from your list...amazing what we don't see when there is so much offered to see! Amazing hunk of thinking, research, writing, and more you've put into series! You're the best!
But wait...am I just not seeing it...where's My Cousin Vinny? Good call though on leaving out Spaceballs.
You are the best desert blondie.
RE: My C Vinny: My summation of that film was looooong movie to wait for one great scene at the end. HOWEVER, during the course of the countdown it was on TV so Paula n I watched it and I have changed my mind. It is very funny.
When I release the 200 Films part after this you will see that I am gonna be making some edits!!
Spaceballs WAS funny but Star Wars jokes? it was in 1976 people. AND that guy Mel Brooks is the reason we have to watch all those STUPID FUGGIN Wayan bros. Scary Movie, Epic Money, Make Me Wanna Barf movie is more like it.
How much talent does it take to watch other people's stuff and then make fun of it? None. We all do that at home. Ditto Forrest Gump too. Have some idiot run through every major event in history. What did that script take, five minutes to write? That box of chocolates line is evil too.
Glad you're rethinking My Cousin Vinny...sorry you, at first, thought it was just one looooonnngg movie waiting for a great end scene. I think there's hilarious scenes all through it...the Menu at the diner? The witness with dirty window screens? The red tuxedo? The Mud? The biological clock? The hick pool hustler? Sleeping better in a noisy prison cell than in a quiet southern town? The "trick question" for the Lisa character? Every pronunciation of Joe Pesci's? Huntin' little deah?
don't forget to check out the new countdown of REAL FILMS TOO.
ok...ill let it go...nice work
I couldn't agree more with DJ. Awesome list and I am looking forward to the next.
What is it about countdowns that are so compelling? I have to watch them on TV but I Tivo it so I can get to the good stuff asap. You were very tricky and made us wait, but (grudgingly) it was worth it! There really must be something to delayed gratification after all.
I am sorry that you think I bailed on you DJ. I went out of town and my family there didn't have internet there and I was so busy I wasn't able to go to Starbucks to work a little bit. I was gone for a week but when I came home we took my 7 year old cousin home and I was busy entertaining her and didn't get a lot of time to read or relax. But blah.. blah.. blah..
I did read this hub as soon as I got back though. I thought I mentioned it in the second funniest movie.:(
I can't believe I am saying this but here is ANOTHER movie I have not seen. :( Yet ANOTHER movie I must go rent or buy just so I can come back and know what you are talking about. You like Woody Allen right? I mean we talked about him before. Oh I just realized I should have gotten that hint when you brought him up in the forum... :D I will try and see this movie as soon as possible.
But good news! I went and bought "The Usual Suspects" and I will watch that tonight and get back to you on that movie.
Sorry again. I didn't mean to be rude and leave ya hangin.
I just came accross your list and obviously one person's taste is much different from others and here are some movies I think are in need of a top 100. Anchorman: Legend of Ron Burgendy, Mamma's Boy, Accepted, Basketball, Tenecious D in the Pick of Destiny, Happy Gilmore, Beerfest, Love Stinks, Old School, Zoolander, School of Rock, Mallrats, Kickin it Old School, Run Ronnie Run, Over Her Dead Body and finally Step Brothers.
hey great list got some great movies on it! just one thing tho u soo have to have grandmas boy on there it's dead funny!xxx
An excellent place to hang out and have a funny entertainment.... This hubpage is very useful and filled with lots of interesting! Nice list, I'd definately agree with.. Thanks for the excellent Hub! Its amazing...
where's crazy weekend at bernies?didn't like that one?
'throw mamma of the train' isn't there as well but animation movie finding nemo is?also 'amos and andrew' ....... your number one is an excelent choice!!!!!!
i think neighbors & caveman are 2 of the greatest comedies ever ***
I introduced my wife to Weird Al Yankovic's 1989 UHF. She immigrated from Hong Kong in the mid-90's so had never heard of this movie. It was just as funny as I remember it when I first saw it. Gotta include this flick somewhere in the top 100! :)
