If you're interested in starting a Web 2.0 business, you should know a few things. You should know how the Internet works today. You should know how business works in general. And you should know that this landscape is going to change and that you're going to have to adapt your business as time goes on or you're not going to make it in the long run.

Those are the main things that you'll need to learn. But within those main things are a plethora of basic things that you need to know to get started in the world of Web 2.0. Here are 40 of those basic things to get you started:

1. What Web 2.0 is. Wikipedia has a basic definition that you can start with.

2. You must use social networking sites to connect with others on the web.

3. You must use social bookmarking sites to spread your content to others.

4. User-generated content is key so you'll have to always be creative.

5. Collaboration is the root of Web 2.0 so you'll need to learn to play well with others.

6. Many of the same marketing techniques that apply to real world business apply in the virtual world so consider taking a business class.

7. If you don't have broadband Internet, you're behind the times.

8. VoIP is on the rise so you should start getting used to the idea that you're going to do your voice communication through your computer.

9. Copyrights matter online. Make sure that you understand them and that you protect your own without violating others.

10. Start-ups can make it big. This means yours can do well if you want it to; it also means you need to watch your competition.

11. Flash is going to improve your site immensely.

40. All of these rules are going to change. The nature of the web 2.0 world is that it fluctuates with the latest consumer demands. Be prepared to take on new faces and try new things in order to stay alive in the changing Internet.

The main thing that you need to know is that there is a lot to learn about starting a web 2.0 business. It's fairly easy to do but it's also something that only gets good with a lot of effort. Be prepared to read all of the latest information coming out about Web 2.0 and the technology that surrounds it. And then get ready to dig your heels in and do a lot of work!
