Let’s face it. Cosmetic surgery is now becoming a trend. A lot of people from all walks of life, from all country or race, regardless of the skin color, are undergoing cosmetic surgery or, at least, are thinking about having one. These people know that a cosmetic surgery is not a walk in the park (it’s not easy on the finances either) but still they are willing to undergo such treatment.

If you’re one of those people who are considering cosmetic surgery, this hub is definitely for you. Cosmetic surgery has its own risks and complications so you need to learn more about it. Here are a couple of things that you should know before having a cosmetic surgery:

Know who will perform the procedure and what his/her credentials are. Meet your potential surgeon first before agreeing on the procedure and spend some time talking to him / her. Are you comfortable with that person? Does he or she know how to make you comfortable? Find out his or her credentials and if he or she is board certified in dermatology or a similar specialty in medicine. Having a board-certified dermatologist managing your surgery can decrease the chances of any complications or misdiagnosis before, during and after your cosmetic surgery.

Know your doctor’s reputation and level of experience. Once you get your doctor’s credentials, the next thing to do is to find out his / her reputation and level of experience. Ask how many times your doctor has performed the same surgery in the past and if he or she had special training in the type of procedure he or she is going to perform on you. Ask around for your doctor’s reputation. It may even be better if you can find another patient of your doctor so that you can gain firsthand knowledge of your doctor’s capabilities.

What happened to your doctor’s other patients. Ask for pictures of your doctor’s patients. Better yet, ask for pictures that show the “before” and “after” look of the previous patients. This will give you a better idea of the level of expertise of your doctor. Or, you can get referrals to previous patients so that you can visit them and talk to them about their experience. Be wary of a doctor who is hesitant to give you the photos or the referrals, it would be better if you simply walk away from this type of a doctor and just find another one.

What will happen to you after the surgery. What will you look like after the surgery? Best to find out beforehand so that you can level your expectations to the projected results. Ask your doctor to explain the potential results to you and why he or she thinks these are the results. A good doctor will have your medical history and skin examination results on hand and have already thoroughly assessed them. The assessment will enable him or her to explain the results better to you. Also ask about follow-up procedures and what you need to do after the surgery to ensure the best possible results from the procedure. It will be useless if you undergo the procedure, get the look that you want afterward but will not come back for the follow-up procedure as the results will not really last as long as they should.

The risks, possible side-effects and complications of the procedure. Nothing in life comes for free and a cosmetic surgery is no exception. But then, we’re not talking about the money here but the risks of such a procedure. Throw in the possible complications as well and, well, you really need to know all about them. And you need to know all about them before you undergo the procedure. So, ask, ask, ask. Ask your doctor, the people who already had cosmetic surgery and ask those who are considering the same surgery. Research the internet and find out on your own what these risks, side-effects and complications are. This is not to make you back out from the procedure. Rather, this is to make you more aware of what you are facing and becoming more aware means you may also become more comfortable with them before undergoing the procedure.

How long will you need to recover. How long does it take before you recover from the procedure? Although cosmetic surgery has become less invasive and requires little recovery time, it is still best to know just how long the “recovery time” is. The time is not the only thing important but the reason why you will need a longer (or shorter) recovery time (see previous tip on possible side-effects).

Are the results permanent or temporary. And if temporary, how long are they going to last? Majority of the cosmetic surgery results are not permanent and may only last for a few months. You need to know how many months you can have the results that you want. It will also make you better prepared in terms of paying for the costs of your surgery; present and future (remember cosmetic surgeries are NOT cheap).

The place where the surgery will take place. This is another thing you need to know to prove that your prospective doctor is not a fly-by-night type of surgeon or dermatologist. Make sure that the surgery will take place inside either your doctor’s (permanent) office, or an accredited surgical suite or outpatient center. Some surgeries may also take place inside shopping malls or clinics but the surgical suite or outpatient center is really a better alternative than the malls or clinics.

The cost of the surgery. Know how much you are expected to shell out for the surgery and any follow-up procedures that need to be performed. Do you have insurance and can it cover the costs of the surgery? If not, do you have the money available for such surgery?

Still want to have that cosmetic surgery? Then please tread carefully. Make sure you know these things (and a whole lot more) before undergoing the procedure. It will save you from a lot of heartaches later on if something goes wrong with the procedure. At the end of the day, you and you alone can ensure the success of your cosmetic surgery and being extra careful and vigilant will go a long way towards ensuring this success.
