A Must Read for Christian Women: A Woman's Walk With God by Elizabeth George
A Review of A Woman's Walk With God
On days when I am just too tired to deal with one more problem, I pull out my well worn copy of A Woman’s Walk with God by Elizabeth George sitting on my book shelf. I have a number of books that I enjoy reading, but I find myself coming back to this book again and again. Particularly when I feel like I need some guidance in my day to day, too busy life that is filled with sick children, pressing business and family crisis, never ending household chores and no time to catch my breath. This book not only helps clarify the concept of the “fruit of the spirit” but it provides a blueprint to help the modern woman deal with the problems that face us all.
The fruit of the spirit is described by Elizabeth George as “those gracious habits which the Holy Spirit produces in the Christian.” She goes on to say that “listed in Galatians 5:22-23, they are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. “ I know when I first read this book I hungrily looked at that list and thought that my life was desperately in need of a good measure of each of those wonderful traits. It seems that some days I have love and joy, but patience and peacefulness are missing in my corner of the world. Then other days when I am being patient, my self control vanishes in the face of a chocolate sundae. So one thing is clear to me – if I want to bear more spiritual fruit I need to learn more about what the Holy Spirit has planned for me. This book is a tremendous help.
Elizabeth takes each fruit of the Spirit and using scripture, talks about what that should look and feel like in a Christian woman’s walk. She also helps the reader understand that the only way we can enjoy a harvest of spirituality is “when we yield to God and allow His spirit to work in us as we walk through life.”
A reader review on Amazon.com beautifully sums up the impact of Elizabeth George’s book:
This is a gentle journey into discovering the spirit within all of us. Rejoicing in the role of mother, daughter, wife, housekeeper, working mom, single mom. It is a journey we choose to take with our hearts and thoughts focused on the fruit as opposed to the flesh. I especially enjoyed Ms. George humbleness of describing her own challenges to overcome of the flesh. Very sweetly written with a very special message.
A Woman’s Walk with God is not the most recent book written by Elizabeth George, but it is a marvelous book that every busy Christian woman should have on her bookshelf as a reminder and a guide to truly abiding in Christ and growing in the Fruit of the Spirit.
