American-Made Artisanal Liquor: 6 to Try
Artisanal Liquors
States are relaxing their liquor-making laws and as a result, more small-batch distilleries are entering the market. Artisans are perfecting the craft and are now competing with the larger distilleries. (See link below for guide to American whiskeys)
Just as the micro-breweries popped up all through the 1990s and produced great beers (see link for new beers), the micro-distilleries are doing the same thing - and proving that Americans can make a quality liquor as well.
The appeal
One appeal is the local flavor. For example, the single malt whiskey from Oregon is aged in barrels made from air-dried Oregon oak. A vodka in Minnesota gets its wheat and rye from local farmers. And a vodka produced in Kansas uses grain from the heartland.
Additionally, just like wine produced in different wineries, the same applies to different micro-distilleries - there is a wide variety of tastes because each artisan is different.
The list of 6 American-made artisanal liquors made in small batches::
Vodka:
1 - Shakers Vodka - a vodka that is distilled six times through a continuous distillation process
2 - Haute Vodka - a blend of American grain and corn and pure spring water
3 - Fox Vodka - Kansas grown wheat with hints of buttercream, praline and eggnog
4 - Most Wanted Vodka - has a peppery fade
Single Malt Whiskey:
5 - McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey - a smooth whiskey made with peat-malted barley from Scotland
Gin:
6 - Bluecoat American Dry Gin - distilled in a custom-built, hand-hammered copper pot still, and made with organic juniper berries
