An Ode to Mothers

Mother, mom, ma, mama, amma, amee, madre, all among some of the names mothers are called all over the world.  No matter how a mother is called, a mother is a special being, no matter where one is from.  The ties that bind a mother to her children are from the moment of conception.  A mother is the first living being, babies’ first get to know.  They get to know the sound of her heart beats, like no other.  It is this beat and rhythm that lulls them to sleep or calms and comforts them in their warm, watery home.  It is the loving and cozy touch of her womb that cradles the baby in the darkness.  A mother’s voice is the voice they know so well, the magic voice they hold onto, without any fear of the darkness they are swimming in.   The rumblings in her stomach are the sounds of nature they do not know yet but the working sounds of the mothers body gives the unborn infant, the first cues to accept future sounds that will invade forever, during life’s journey, as life is full of sounds like one big orchestra.

Once born, the baby clings to those very familiar sounds for comfort.  Now, new sensations are experienced with this familiar person.  Taste!  That her milk has, as it nourishes, succors and soothes that new hunger sensation.   Her soft touch as she touches the baby with her gentle hands.  The soothing, reassuring and calm feeling a mother’s hands provide relieves and eases all discomfort, comforting the baby at all times.  Her very own smell that invades her surroundings and lulls the baby, a mommy smell that lets the baby know she is near.  Then there is the sight of the mother.  Even though doctors say, babies see in a blur, a baby knows the mother’s blur as well as her heart beat lullaby.

Mothers are those special beings who are home, parent and friend.  No matter what kind of house one has, it becomes a home when the presence of a mother is there.  It is that presence that makes children run home when something good or bad happens.  It is the mother they want to be comforted by or to tell the good news to.  Whether they were bullied, bothered, fell, got hurt or got an A at school.  They want to run to mommy, to kiss or hug away the pain or make her smile at the good news.

Mommy is who children need by their bedside when sick.  Even grown up children, need their mommies and like to have them nearby when sick or ill.  Adults too, find mothers to be a calming presence.  Mothers are totally selfless.  They will give up everything and anything for the well being of their children.

Mothers are multifaceted people.  They are home makers, cleaners, cooks, chauffeurs, teachers, nurses, psychologists, comforter, friend sister, daughter, wife and a myriad other things all rolled into one.  The complexity of being a mother is endless.  The most complex job on earth is that of a mother but she will be the last person to think so. She just performs all her tasks without a second thought for herself.

Children do not ask to be born, mothers decide to have children and give them life when they bring them into this world.  Mothers know that it is a mother’s duty to do the best for their babies and it is a mother’s love for her child that makes her achieve the impossible. Her baby will always be her baby no matter how old the baby has become.  In a mother’s heart, a baby is always and forever her baby.

GOD BLESS MOTHERS EVERYWHERE.
