Episode Summary
Gentleman Dan Caldwell is one of the most famous and notorious guests the Mayberry Jail has ever housed. It's doesn't take much for Gentleman Dan to not only charm his way into the good graces of an already smitten Barney, but Opie and Aunt Bee also. A master of charm, Dan is treated practically like royalty when he locked up. Andy, however, none too trusting of Mayberry's guest. Of course, it's not long before Dan turns the tables on his new found friends in an attempt to escape. It's Andy's quick, thinking that saves the day and keeps Caldwell behind bars.
Notes/Trivia/Quotes
- Barney misfires his gun for the first time. He accidentally fires a shot into the courthouse floor. Later in the episode, Andy fires the gu, thinking that it is empty.
- The series was filmed entirely in Hollywood, at Desilu Productions on the former RKO Pictures lot. Mayberry exteriors were shot on the former Selznick International Pictures lot, later known as Forty Acres. The rural fishing hole that opened each episode was Franklin Canyon Lake, just north of Beverly Hills. Franklin Canyon was also the site of the show's Myers Lake and other outdoor locales.
- The whistled theme song, "The Fishin' Hole" was composed by Earle Hagen (the music coordinator and famous whistler of the show) and Herbert Spencer, with unsung lyrics by Everett Sloane. Hagen also wrote the music for the series.
- Mayberry is a small community with a population varying between 2,000 to 5,360 over the course of the show's run. The community's founding predates the American War for Independence and some characters trace their ancestry to its early settlers.
- Only Andy Griffith, Ron Howard, Frances Bavier, Don Knotts and Hope Summers appeared in all eight seasons. Don Knotts was a regular character for the first five seasons and a recurring one for the last three.
