Annecy, France - The most beautiful french town in the heart of the alps
Annecy - la plus belle ville
In September, 2007 I found myself arriving in Annecy on my own, by train from Paris. There is a direct train from Paris, Gare de Lyon, which has you arriving in Annecy in about 3 hours.
With my first walk along the lake, I couldn't believe my luck. Somehow, I managed to choose the most beautiful place I've ever seen as my home for the next 4 months. Annecy is a town which sits directly on Lac d'Annecy, which is surrounded by the Swiss alps on three sides. As my landlords joked - why buy Evian water, when it's coming out of the facets for free.
The lake sits right next to the old town and can easily be explored during a day, but deserves far more time to fully appreciate the beauty. My morning commute to the French language school allowed me to bike through the old town and along the lake. Often as I looked out at the lake, I saw a solo fisherman through the morning fog, and just a hint of the mountains behind.
While visiting Annecy, take advantage of the location. Hike up the mountains, cycle around the lake, or take a day trip to Chambery, Chammonix, Lyon, or Geneva.
Annecy could be seen in a few hours, however to become totally enchanted by it, why not stay a while? Find an apartment to let for a few weeks, and enroll in a French language course. The school will help you find accommodation to your suiting. Ifalpes was the school I attended in Annecy, and it was a decision which changed my life and the best decision I've ever made.
