What are Antioxidants?

If you are not familiar with antioxidants, they are important substances found in fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are important in slowing the aging process as well as preventing certain illnesses and diseases.

Some key areas that antioxidants help with are providing stronger resistance to the flu, viruses and infections. It has also been shown to reduce the chances of getting many types of cancers, prevention of glaucoma, macular degeneration, reduced risk of cholesterol oxidation and heard disease, and the aging of the cells in the body.

They work by fighting and eliminating the free radicals in the body which is important as free radical oxidation is the primary cause of aging.

Fruit has some of the highest concentrations of antioxidants found in food. Some of the fruits that have the highest concentration of antioxidants are:

  • Cherries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Crowberries
  • Blueberries
  • Wild Blueberries
  • Black Currants
  • Pomegranates
  • Grapes
  • Oranges
  • Plums

Vegetables are also excellent sources of antioxidants. Some examples include:
