Article Spinning

Article Spinners are aimed at website owners, SEOs, authors and anyone else who uses article syndication or press releases as an online marketing strategy. Those promoting Article Spinners claim that the software can generate or ‘spin’ unlimited versions of an original article. Indeed, if you are willing to accept the dubious quality they churn out and care little for your reputation as an author or copywriter, that’s exactly what they do.

In a previous article I voiced my opinion as to why I thought Article Spinning was a flawed concept. It seems I am not alone in my concern. The Wikipedia definition is quite damming:

Article spinning is a search engine optimization technique by which blog or website owners attempt to manipulate their rank on Google and other search engines. It works by replacing elements of articles plagiarized from other websites to avoid being penalized for duplication.

Although article spinning may, at least for now, fool the search engines, it produces pages that are of poor quality for humans to read.

Since writing my original article have had the opportunity to ask some of the people behind the biggest and best known article directories what they thought of article spinning. Here is what they had to say on the subject:

Guna Seelan: www.submitinme.com

“A blog or website that takes a feed from a particular category of ezinearticles and a couple other article sites might become filled with spun articles which will eventually force the blog owner to cancel his syndication from multiple directories.”

“An article that is spun 25 times and submitted to ezine alone will create a big issue in the future and is highly unethical. This will kill the purpose of Article Directories and will mark the death of them. As thousands of articles are submitted every day, it will be next to impossible for even ezinearticles to monitor the spun articles.”

Guna makes two very interesting points. I find it worrying that a product supposedly designed to help with the distribution of articles might hurt the sites and resources that it depends on.

Mel Strocen: www.goarticles.com

“I expect that as long as article marketing is effective for acquiring traffic and backlinks, article spinning will remain a problem.”

Mel went on to say “At this point in time, however, we find that the biggest problem is plagiarism, copyright violation and article spam. The latter is the most common. Typically, article spam takes the form of short submissions ranging in length from 50 - 200 words and is nothing more than site links or a short advertorial.”

This seems to reflect comments I have seen posted in the forums by Hubbers who have received duplicate content warnings because their hard work has been stolen and placed on other sites. What you are seeing are those works that have been scraped or copied word for word. However, there may be other spun copies of your work out there which remain undetected and  are being passed off as someone else’s work.

I understand that many authors use Article Spinners to rewrite and reposition their own work in order to escape duplicate content filters. However, it’s my experience that syndicating the same article, untouched and un-spun, produces the results I need by way of achieving rankings and passing link juice.

Thanks for the warnings regarding article spinning. I'm sure there's a great deal of copying and/or plagiarism done on the Internet. Can it ever be stopped entirely?...

Hey Peter, I see you don't seem to like the concept of article spinning at all. I have read some of your other hubs about this and I can understand your dislike, but I am sure it's because of the bad stories you have heard about it or because of the bad results produced from people who just use some of the article spinning tools to spit out thrash, without taking good amount of time and effort to ensure the quality of content is topnotch. You see, article spinnning is "jargon in jargon out". It gives you what you put in. If you put a good amount of time and effort, you will get good results.

Article spinning is evil if you are evil. It is NOT evil if you are NOT evil. This reminds me of a statement I heard sometime ago that goes - There's no evil in the Atom. Only in men's hearts. Those people who made the atomic bomb for the purpose of destroying people are the evil people, not necessary the atom itself. Same applies with article spinning. There's no evil in article spinning... only in men's hearts! So, don't believe those people who go around saying that article spinning is EVIL. It's not.

There's a lot more to article spinning than just getting an article spinning software with a huge synonyms database (thesaurus) for replacing every word with several others. This will only lead to completely unreadable articles. Anyone that thinks article spinning is all about this has it all wrong. There's much more to article spinning and if done right, it can help you produce hundreds of high quality and readable articles.

I am more than happy to be proven wrong, however from the perspective of a professional SEO and marketer, the articles I am required to produce for clients are very targeted towards specific services and products not just a keyword set.

I see no point in handing over a bunch of overly similar documents that don’t scan, that are not completely unique, that fail to grab the reader’s attention from the initial headline and lead them to a highly effective call to action. And I don’t understand why anyone would want to accept anything less.

Furthermore, do you actually understand what normalised text looks like after it has had all the stop words removed and everything that is left reduced to its root? For any article spinner to be effective this is the level it would have to work at.

How does the product you are eager to promote get round this fundamental problem?

@ Article Spinner, You should write a couple of hubs explaining your point of view. That way you can link back to your website from your own hubs rather than mine.

Yes, Peter, you are right... I should write a couple of hubs not just explaining my point of view but throw a lot more light on how anyone can do article spinning the RIGHT way.

Thanks a lot for mentioning it, :) If there's one thing I do pretty well is write and spin articles the RIGHT way. If done properly using phrases, sentences rewriting and paragraph rewriting, one can spit out hundreds and even thousands of high quality and unique articles.

I look forward to reading your hubs, perhaps one of them might answer my question about document normalisation.
