Banana Lumpia - Filipino Snack or Dessert

Updated on May 17, 2013

Banana Desserts are Popular

Banana lumpia is an affordable dessert or snack that is enjoyable to eat and actually very easy to make, thus it is a very popular treat in the Philippines. It can be found served in most popular open vendor markets and places where outdoor food carts are located. Coming in both a stick form with just the plantain cooked with a little brown sugar or the wrapped version with a crunchy outside.

Despite being fried in oil, at least it is a banana or plantain, so it has some good qualities for your daily nutritional requirements. :) The style preferred by many is the version wrapped, which is like an egg roll wrapper and then it is fried in hot cooking oil, however I prefer the taste of olive oil and find it still gets hot enough to fry adequately. While a halo halo or mango float is an excellent choice when seeking a sweet dessert banana lumpia can be very filling and keep you full late into the night.

This treat is also great as just a regular snack in the middle of the day, but leave off the extra sugar or ice cream toppings.

Many Americans do not eat enough diversity of food. If you are in a rut and looking for something different to try, check out the large plantains at the grocery store, they are the really large sized banana looking things in the fruit section. They do not have the perfect yellow color as the typical Chiquita, but are often green with some yellow, and even some areas with a little black or rough spots. However, they have a large outer peel so do not be fearful of a less then perfect outside. Once peeled and lightly cooked in oil a plantain is very soft and pleasant to eat.
