Becoming an Avon Representative: A simple guide on how to become an Avon representative

Updated on July 16, 2009

This is an outline on how to become an Avon representative, also known as Avon girls. Whether looking for a part time job to earn a little more money or a full time job, more and more people are looking to become an Avon representative. What follows should be a brief outline on how to become an Avon representative.

A pile of money. If you become an Avon representative this may be possible with lots of hard work.
A pile of money. If you become an Avon representative this may be possible with lots of hard work.

The role

For those who are unsure exactly what Avon is, it is the largest direct selling company, with over 5 million people currently being employed as Avon representatives. After becoming an Avon representative the representative attempts (and hopefully sells) products to their friends, family and anyone else they may know. On each product which they successfully sell they earn a commission, which is where the Avon representative's earnings come from. As such, it is easy to see that the more that is sold, the greater the earnings of the Avon representative in question.

How to sell the Avon products is a question which is often asked.  The selling can be done in a variety of ways.  It is possible to use samples for various goods and throw an Avon party for friends and family where the Avon representative can hope to sell the full price version of these goods.  Another way for the Avon representative to generate sales is by using Avon catalogues and delivering these to family, friends, neighbours and local businesses who will then hopefully make purchases.  The final option is through using a dedicated website which has been set up with assistance from the company, which has all of the products on it.  Of course there is also the option to use these various ways in tandem with one another.

Benefits of becoming an Avon Representative

There are a number of benefits associated with becoming an Avon representative:

  • Be your own boss.  Once you have become an Avon representative you can work as few or as many hours as you like with near total flexibility on when you choose to work.
  • No need to build up a large stock inventory.  A large cost associated with traditional businesses is buying stock to then sell on, but due to the way in which Avon works, even once you have become a representative there is no need to purchase stock.
  • Tailor the business size to available space.  There may be the need to store and sort stock somewhere for distributing - this can take up varying amount of space depending on the sales.  Whether having only a small part of a room or a whole garage it is possible to manage the sales accordingly.
  • Refer others and earn extra.  After becoming an Avon representative if you then move on and manage to recruit others to become an Avon representative it is possible to earn even more.  You will earn ongoing money which is relative to their earnings and so by showing them exactly how to become an Avon representative and how to be a good one is another source of money.
  • Avon representatives also get other benefits such as health insurance plans etc.

Why choose to become an Avon representative over all the alternatives?

As has been previously mentioned Avon is the largest such direct selling company with over 5 million representatives.  This means the company must have a good business and treat each individual representative well to make them want to continue to be part of the business.  The size of the company is also beneficial, it is well respected and known throughout the regions in which it operates which gives people additional confidence that it isn't a scam.  This is especially important after just becoming an Avon representative and selling to people who aren't close friends or family for the first time.

The goods Avon sells are also well respected and in great demand.  Many people use the same Avon products for years and when their Avon representative stops taking orders they strive to find a new Avon representative.  Some retiring Avon representatives are also rumoured to have been asked by their clients how to become an Avon representative so that they can themselves become an Avon representative so they can continue to get hold of the goods.

How to become an Avon representative?

Becoming an Avon representative is a relatively simple process - although one which many people are unsure how to do.  There is a small cost, at present about $10 if in the United States.  This covers some training on how to become successful as an Avon representative, as well equipment to get started.  This equipment generally includes some free samples, a DVD on becoming a flourishing Avon representative, and 20 free brochures.

Possibly the easiest way to become an Avon representative is by becoming a mentee of an existing Avon representative.  This can either be instigated by the existing Avon representative approaching potential new representatives, or by a person who wishes to become a representative approaching an existing Avon seller.  If this option is not available, it is possible to register interest online here.  Whichever option is chosen, there is still the need to pay the $10 joining fee.

After becoming an Avon representative what next?

After the initial brochure and samples run out there is potentially the need to buy more samples and brochures.  This will generally involve a small charge, but this will hopefully be more than cancelled out by the income from previous sales.

After a while it should be a self sustaining business.  In addition, it will become clear who will be regular customers and who are unlikely to purchase and so efforts can be concentrated on those who generate the most sales.  At this stage many people either decide to reduce their workload only concentrating on the profitable customers, or they continue at the present workload but only target those who have generate sales, or those who are likely to in the future.

Another route which many people take after themselves becoming an Avon representative is they attempt to sign up others to also become an Avon representative, to try to earn extra money from being a senior sales representative.

Good luck and maybe if you become an Avon representative I will be contacted by you soon!
