Before you buy Gas logs there are a few things to consider. One... are the Gas logs vented or vent free? Two...are there any allergies? Now that being said...i will explain the differences between the two types of Gas logs for your fireplace.
Vented Gas logs are gas logs that require the damper to remain in the open position when they are being burned. They look more realistic in my opinion as well. The downside of the vented logs is they do not produce the amount of heat that vent free logs provide. Gas logs can burn either natural gas or propane. Propane gas typically will provide more heat due to a hotter flame.
Vent free gas logs do not require the damper to be open when burning but, I recommend leaving the damper open at least one inch to allow the fumes to escape. I know..i know..they are 99.9% efficient..yea right! So was your car when you first bought it, and now it smokes a little when you crank it up. This is the reason i say leave the damper open a little. The amount of heat that will be lost is minimal to the peace of mind it provides.
Now the next thing i want to talk about is allergies. If you have any upper respiratory allergies, or asthma, you may want to reconsider getting gas logs. It will aggravate any problems you may have. I am a Chimney Sweep in South Carolina for over 25 years, and have seen all kinds of problems with the use of gas logs. I don't mean to sound as though i am bashing gas logs, that is not the case. I just want people to be aware of the problems that may occur. Also, make sure you have a chimney cap on your chimney because rain will come down the flue, and can ruin the gas logs. The main reason you need a chimney cap is to keep the rain out so mold spores won't form and cause even more problems.
OK, now the next thing i want to tell you is to invest in a carbon monoxide detector. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Although gas logs have oxygen depletion systems on them, i just like the added insurance.

The logs will remain 99.9 percent efficent. Just like your car, they will need to be maintained. With proper maintenance you can leave your damper closed, thus retaining ALL the heat produced by the log set
This has been super helpful for me, thanks. I have a follow-up question to anyone familiar with the vent free logs. There is a large price range for them, from $89 bucks to over $1000. I can see how a remote would be added value, but what else creates such a price difference? The system seems pretty basic, what would you anticipate failing in a cheaper set compared to a more expensive set?

Hi..the reason for the price difference usually is the appearance of the logs.. Most expensive logs look more realistic. Also, the style of remote control ssytem will make it cost more. A basic on/off remote is cheaper than a remote system that has flame height adjustment as well.. Hope this helps..Joe :-)
